TikTok and Douyin remain two of the most popular apps on the planet. In 2019, TikTok surpassed one billion downloads, enough to make Facebook tremble. Despite this huge success, its publisher, ByteDance, has to regularly clean up its platform to ensure the safety of its users.
As our colleagues at the Gizchina site told us, Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) does not joke with fake account owners. Thus, in October 2020 alone, the platform 133,904 videos, 33,028 audio clips, 1,862 challenges, and 836,100 accounts were permanently blocked.
The social network also claims that since the summer of 2020, it has launched a campaign to clean up pornographic content and accounts used in prostitution networks. It is alleged that only in October 2020, the Douyin Security Center was removed 472,797 accounts containing pornographic content and/or linked to prostitution networks. 54,358 fake accounts were also fixed and permanently banned.
New delay for TikTok in the US
As a reminder, the status of TikTok in the United States is still unclear. On November 12, 2020, the Trump administration gave the social network another reprieve. As can be read on the official website of the United States Treasury Department, ByteDance has until November 27, 2020 to comply with government requirements and complete the takeover of TikTok by Oracle and Wallmart.
““This extension will provide the parties with additional time to resolve this matter,” he said. Monica Crowley, spokeswoman for the US Treasury Department, gave assurances on this matter. ByteDance leaders say: ““I look forward to reaching a solution that will address security concerns.”
ByteDance also says it’s a relief to finally hear from the US government. TikTok has claimed that the US government forgot to ban it in the run-up to the presidential election. The company feared that the takeover would be overrun by deadlines and that TikTok’s 1,500 American employees would be put at risk.
