HTC One M8 and One M9 Android 6.0 Updates Hit US 1

HTC One M8 and One M9 Android 6.0 Updates Hit US

Very late in December, HTC fulfilled its promise to release Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates for the HTC One M9 before the end of the year, but that was only for a very small number of users with the unlocked model. Owners in the United States had to wait much longer, but we’re slowly getting good news. In February, Sprint HTC One M8 got Marshmallow and then M9 same treatment on both Sprint and T-Mobile. Now, Verizon is finally getting ready to launch it as well.

Earlier in October, Google released Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and the HTC One A9 was the first non-Nexus device to run the new software. HTC is slowly pushing updates for older devices and now most of the flagship HTC One M9 is getting the latest version.

Once HTC has delivered the new software for select devices and smaller regions only, it’s ready for a global release. Users in the UK, Canada, and now the United States are slowly getting the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. Below is everything users need to know.

Several rumors last year suggested that the HTC One M8 and HTC One M9 would receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow in the United States during the first week of January, with HTC even suggesting late December for the Verizon HTC One M9. But that wasn’t the case, and the update didn’t arrive until February for most. It arrived on Sprint and T-Mobile in mid-February, as shown below.

We finally have good news for Verizon users with the old HTC One M8. Recently HTC’s own Mo Versi confirmed on Twitter The Verizon HTC One M8 Android 6.0 Marshmallow update has been confirmed and will begin rolling out Sunday night and Monday, March 7 for most owners. Verizon also confirmed this. That said, Verizon confirmed the DROID Turbo 2 Android 6.0 update last week and it has yet to arrive. If you got Android 6.0 for One M8 or DROID Turbo 2 from March 7th, leave a comment below.

Current HTC One M9 and former HTC One M8 owners in the United States are still waiting for the update, except for a few select carriers. The Google Play Edition and unlocked developer models have already received an update for Marshmallow, but this week’s news means it’s finally ready to be rolled out to US carriers.

In mid-January, HTC UK confirmed that the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update will launch across the UK, with the One M9 coming soon. Unfortunately, there is no exact date for the new HTC One M9, but it’s safe to say it will be here soon.

It’s weird to see the old phone get an update first, but technically that makes sense. Prioritizing the first device to be released over new models, which is the exact opposite of what Samsung, LG and others are doing. This suggests that HTC will update both old and new rather than just focusing on the latest phones and keeping old phones waiting for months.

We also have good news for those based in Canada or using the HTC One M9 on carriers like Sasktel, Rogers, Wind and Videotron. Mo Versi, who has always been vocal about HTC on Twitter, sharing release timelines and details, said so in January.

On January 18, all the carriers mentioned above started shipping Android 6.0 Marshmallow to HTC One M9. Most of them should have already taken it and now it’s reaching all over the United States.

Operators in the United States have a lot of control over software updates, as many users already know. Most put the software through rigorous testing phases that take 4-6 weeks to complete. Verizon has already delivered the update for the One M9, LG G4 and many other phones. All HTC One M9 owners should be on Android 6.0 at this point and the M8 is almost finished in the US as well.

At the beginning of February, HTC and Sprint approved HTC One M8 will get Android 6.0 on February 2 and then support page updated Sprint M9 states that the Android 6.0 update will be available starting February 9. Initial release said February 5, but it took about a week to become available. I hope Verizon HTC One M8 release is not slow or laggy.

A similar comment was made for the HTC One M9 on Verizon, T-Mobile, and others. For US carriers, that means the usual 4-6 weeks of US carrier testing is on the way for Android 6.0 Marshmallow to launch in early February on the HTC One M8 and M9. Now that all HTC One M9 owners have Android 6.0, we move on to the One M8. Those expecting an update early next week should check settings > about phone > software updates.
