HTC One Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update Dump

Earlier in the week, Google officially released the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow and started rolling it out to select Nexus smartphones and tablets. Naturally, we are hearing from manufacturers regarding update plans, and we have more details to share about the HTC One Android 6.0 Marshmallow update release schedule today.

Earlier this week HTC made a few minor announcements and confirmed that Android 6.0 updates for the HTC One M8 and the newer HTC One M9 will start arriving before the end of the year, but that’s all we’ve heard so far. That said, at least one variant of the HTC One M8 will receive the update before the end of October.

The closest thing to a Nexus device is a Google Play Edition smartphone or tablet, starting with the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition a few years ago. And while Samsung doesn’t update its GPe phone very often, HTC did. Today we learned that HTC One M8 Google Play Edition will be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow before the end of the month.

Today, HTC’s voice on Twitter, Mo Versi, who has always been very open and transparent about updates, approved HTC One M8 GPe will get the update first and they are targeting the end of the month. If HTC can deliver that fast (if Motorola can’t beat them), the Nexus will be the fastest device to get Android M, which isn’t a smartphone or tablet.

However, HTC has a lot more than just a few phones, and millions of device owners are probably wondering when and if they’ll see the latest software version. Android 6.0 Marshmallow introduces many new features, battery life and performance improvements, minor changes and other things that excite all users.

HTC One Android 6.0 Updates

The first HTC device to be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be the Google Play Edition HTC One M8 and is expected to see the update before the end of October. However, those who own the HTC One M9 Developer Edition will likely see it next November or early December, followed by regular phones.

Last week, HTC confirmed a timeframe of around 90 days for its two newest smartphones, but as you can see from the image below, these aren’t the only phones that Google plans to introduce its new Marshmallow offering in the near future.

According to the image above provided by HTC, the company wants to update all new HTC One smartphones. To be more specific, the new HTC One M9 and One M8 are the first models to launch with developer edition and unlocked international units before US carriers approve them. Then smartphones like HTC One M9+, E9+, ME, E8, M8 Eye, Butterfly 3 and numerous HTC Desire phones released in the last 12-18 months.

The list is somewhat confusing, but most of these phones are not available in the United States. Important for those using the HTC One M8 or M9 (or M9+) in the US is that these updates probably won’t arrive in 2015.

HTC will aim to deliver this update as soon as possible, but carriers in the United States typically delay software upgrades by 4-6 weeks. So, if we see the HTC One M9 update launch in December, US carriers will likely delay it until the end of January, but we’ll have to wait and see. It’s likely to be almost final and HTC will start testing with carriers early, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Other smartphones like the HTC One M7 Google Play Edition could be added to the list later, but that’s unlikely. HTC may make more announcements as the upgrade process progresses, but for now, this is the official list for all HTC One owners.
