Google will let you choose your search engine on Android

To comply with the necessary measures to ensure free competition within the European Union, Google is currently testing the search engine selection screenwhich should be distributed in 2020. This is reminiscent of the Windows “balloon screen” that Microsoft had to add during the installation of the operating system to offer all users a browser that competes with Internet Explorer.

Four search engine options in each country

This new feature will go into effect in 2020. For all Android devices delivered in the European Economic Area with the Google search app pre-installed. The Mountain View firm has already announced that search engines must participate in an auction system to be part of the proposed alternatives. This information prompted the French Qwant to step in, justifying that free competition was directly distorted by such a measure.

The first screenshot of this selection window has been posted on the XDA developers site. Offers a choice between Search, Qwant, Ecosia, Google and Yahoo. These options will be displayed in random order and may differ depending on the country where the Android device is activated.

Google seems to have started testing the search engine selection screen on Android. A new version of Chrome mentions a “Search Engine Selection” parameter that is not yet possible to test. However, this shows that Google is indeed preparing for the 2020 implementation.
