Google TV is getting a widget on Android, but for what purpose?

Google TV

The Google TV app on Android continues to improve. A few weeks ago, it benefited from a new design that allows it to better integrate with the Material You interface adopted by the mobile operating system since Android 12. 9To5GoogleThe app will soon offer a widget.

Traces of this feature were discovered in version 4.38.7.4 of Google TV, which appeared in the widget list. Currently the widget is not ready and needs to be deployed in a future update, but we already know that it should adopt the 4×5 size by default on the home screen, which is quite cumbersome.

An impressive yet complete widget

The widget has a search bar. Pressing the magnifying glass icon opens the smartphone’s virtual keyboard, which allows you to search for specific content. A remote control icon is also displayed. It refers to the tool that allows you to navigate the Google TV interface on the television via a smartphone, similar to what the Shield TV app offers for the NVIDIA TV box of the same name. When you press the Google TV logo in the middle, the Home tab of the application opens.

Considering the 4×5 space required to include the widget, its final version is likely to include other features as well. In particular, we can imagine that content will be highlighted by the widget through a recommendation system, as the Netflix app’s widget already does.

Google TV shouldn’t be the only Google App getting new widgets. Contacts and Google apps should also each benefit from a widget. These have already been previewed and work on Pixel 7 Pro running Android 13 QPR2 beta. They do not currently work on other smartphones.
