Google: New stylish white design for Gmail, Maps, Drive and Photos

In a blog post, designer Nicolo Blanchino explains that he has collaborated with Adam Grabowski and the Google Material Design team to create a new clean white design for the firm’s apps, including Gmail, Gmaps, Drive and Photos. A video has allowed to explore different aspects of this new interface since it was released privately. As such, we don’t know exactly whether it’s a more or less regulated leak or a simple working base for Google’s development teams.

Google mocks the red-and-white future of Material Design

In Android and iOS apps we find an interface that pushes the boundaries of Material Design: white everywhere, multi-spaced elements, discreet colors and presentation of information in card form. We also note the generalization of the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen and the disappearance of the characteristic colors of applications such as green for Google Play, blue for Google Maps and red for Gmail. So the user experience looks more unified across apps.

Less significant but visible changes also apply to the web version of Google apps in the direction of standardizing the user experience… and it’s always whiter. It is not yet known to what extent all or some of these concepts will be found in Google’s products. However, there was time for the video, which we said we had quickly put in private, to be taken over by a few people associated with Google and re-uploaded to YouTube. We invite you to give an overview of this design evolution in the video below:
