Android pampers you with its web browser options. Still, most users stick with the browser that comes pre-installed on their phones. Almost every phone manufacturer develops a mobile web browser and integrates it with Android skins. So far, Google Chrome is the leader of the pack as it comes pre-installed on almost every Android phone. However, Firefox is trying to threaten Chrome with its new offerings.
Firefox, a former Chrome competitor, is making headlines with a brand new browser on Android with a redesigned user interface, special functions and features. On the other hand, Google Chrome takes advantage of default status and tight integration in the Google ecosystem.
In this article, we will compare the new Firefox browser with Google Chrome. The benchmark will cover UI, web engine, features, cross-platform usability, synchronization, and more. Lets start.
Cross-Platform Availability
Cross-platform usability is essential in the browser game. After all, you want to sync your web bookmarks, history, web passwords, and extensions across platforms.
Available on Google Chrome, Android, iOS, Windows and Mac. Firefox is one step ahead. You can access the Firefox browser on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac and even Linux.

Phones are getting bigger and the latest Android smartphones are coming with taller aspect ratios. Therefore, it is only practical to design the UI with submenus and options. Unfortunately, Google Chrome still uses the old UI with the main options at the top.
The home screen consists of the home button in the upper left corner. Options like profile, tab switcher, and settings menu are at the top. Makes it difficult to navigate in the browser. Rumors suggest that Google is testing new Chrome Android builds with bottom navigation, but it’s not ready to go yet.
Firefox has completely nailed the UI of the new Android browser. Firefox’s design appears to be compatible with phones and long screens that include options like the search bar, tab switcher, and Settings. Accessibility stands out here. You can also switch between tabs and enable private mode from the submenu.
Interestingly, the Firefox browser works perfectly with the dark theme, while Google Chrome does not work with the Android 10 dark mode. The good thing is, this is an all black theme and not a half baked dark gray theme.
Tab Switcher Menu
After a few days or weeks, your web browser will be filled with dozens of tabs. The tab switcher menu plays an important role in your browsing experience.
Google Chrome offers a huge stack of cards as tabs. Tap on the tab switcher menu and it discards all tabs along with features like adding a new one, closing all tabs, and more. Once again, all the options are at the top, which makes it difficult to navigate between opened tabs.
Firefox’s tab switcher is one of the best I’ve ever seen. You can tap on the tab switcher menu and browse through the opened tabs from the submenu.
Web Engine and Performance
I’ve had scrolling issues in Firefox’s Android browser for years. Fortunately, Mozilla has fixed this issue in the latest version of Firefox for Android. It also runs the new GeckoView rendering engine to render web pages. With this and a few new settings, Mozilla claims to follow the highest level of privacy and security available on the Android platform.
Google Chrome uses the Chromium rendering engine to load web pages. I haven’t had any issues with scrolling or loading performance in Chrome. It’s right there with the Firefox browser.
Features and Privacy Options
Google Chrome offers two features to enhance your browsing experience. The company has integrated the Google Translate option into the browser. When Chrome detects a non-native language, it offers to translate the webpage automatically.
Chrome also provides a reader mode called ‘Simplified view’. It cleans all images, videos, ads and offers a simple user interface for reading. You can also change the reading mode view with different font styles and sizes. Other features include Saving data with Simple mode, syncing browsing history, bookmarking and more.
Firefox places great emphasis on privacy options. Provides Privacy report to block cross-site tracking cookies and social trackers. Advanced tracking protection is set to Standard by default. You can also change it to Solid or custom. I hope Google takes this into consideration and provides a solution similar to Chrome.
Firefox also offers a clean looking reader mode. Besides using plugins, you can also change the font style and size. For starters, you can use uBlock Origin to block ads, Dark Reader extension to force dark theme everywhere, and a few other extensions. Currently the Add-on options are limited, but better than what Chrome has to offer.
Other features include the ability to sync tabs, bookmarks, history, Collections (Firefox’s advanced Bookmark manager) and more.
Google Chrome offers Google News integration on the homepage. I’m not a fan but some may like the plugin.
