Google seems to have learned about the existence of document scanners on smartphones because the company has been integrating the technology everywhere for a while now. After improving the app on Google Drive, it is now definitely looking after its most needed app. In fact, it was a bit incomprehensible that Google’s file manager, Files, did not yet offer this option. A violation that the publisher has finally resolved.
You don’t need to install an update to benefit from it. In fact, the functionality appears to be automatically added to the app without requiring any action from the user. It is already available in version 1.2729.610141523.0 of the app. But be careful, only Pixels are currently eligible. As always with Google, this feature is expected to come to other Android smartphones later.
Files finally gets a document scanner
Moreover, the operation could not have been more accommodating. A new button when opening the app Scan appears on the screen. The camera opens when pressed so that the user can take a photo of the document to be scanned. As with other scanning applications, it is possible to crop the image and tell the application which part you actually want to scan.
Of course, it is also possible to request that the application automatically frame the area to be scanned. Various calibration options are available, such as cropping, rotating, and some retouching effects. You can also combine multiple scans to create a single document. Once you have a satisfactory result, all you have to do is save the document. This will appear in the “Scanned” folder.
A new “scan” button is coming to the Google Files app, allowing you to digitize documents.
Scanned documents are saved as PDF files under a new “Scanned” collection under “Documents” (the actual location is /Files from Google/Scanned).
