Android: Nearby Share works even with smartphones in standby mode with one condition

Introduced for the first time in 2022, Nearby Share is slowly preparing to revolutionize file transfer on Android by more or less modeling the formula Apple popularized with AirDrop. First good news: The app was recently launched in France. Second good news: Google has updated it with a very interesting innovation.

Until now, both devices had to be unlocked while the app was open for the transfer to occur correctly. The latest update fixes this. Indeed, it is now possible to transfer files to a locked smartphone with Nearby Share, as shown in the video below taken by our colleagues from Android Authority.

Nearby Sharing is now better than ever on Android

This new feature will definitely save valuable time for users who will no longer have to hold their second device to perform the transfer. Sharing will be possible as long as both are connected to the same network or even close enough to connect via Bluetooth. On one condition at least: both devices must be signed in to the same Google account.

Indeed, Android Authority tried the experiment with a locked smartphone, but it is not tied to the Google account. But the latter did not appear in the list of devices present on the transmitting smartphone. It is not yet known whether Google will offer streaming on devices that are not on the same account in the future.

We would like to remind you that the application is still in beta and therefore subject to many changes before its final distribution. We can’t wait to see what Google still has in store for us on this side.
