Document reveals: PlayStation 5 Slim could be launched soon by Sony

The controversy surrounding the Microsoft buys Activision Blizzard may have revealed an unexpected secret.

In a document sent to the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the company stated that the Sony not only is it producing the PlayStation 5 Slim, but it plans to release the console later this year.

At the moment, Activision Blizzard’s acquisition of Microsoft faces hurdles with regulatory bodies in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The company submitted the document to the FTC in response to objections raised by the agency regarding the approval of the deal. In turn, one of those objections led to a possible leak of information about a new console competing with PlayStation.

Microsoft then countered the claim that Xbox and PlayStation form a “two-market” due to the similar prices of their consoles.

The company further argues that this analysis is mistaken, as it disregards other versions of the products, such as the Xbox Series S and the PS5 Digital Edition, as well as other consoles such as the Nintendo Switch.

However, the document goes even further and mentions that PlayStation “intends to launch a PlayStation 5 later this year, at the same reduced price.”

In other words, the company claims that the PS5 Slim will launch in 2023 at the same price as the Digital Edition.

So far, the Sony has not commented on the existence of the PlayStation 5 Slim. However, the company has previously expressed concerns about the risks of purchasing Activision Blizzard and stated that it will not share information with “a company owned by a direct competitor.”

It is important to note that, so far, the purchase of Activision Blizzard has received approval from regulatory bodies in the European Union, South Korea and Saudi Arabia.

The possible launch of the PlayStation 5 Slim would bring a new dynamic to the market consolesproviding consumers with more options and variety of choice.

Now, we just have to wait for the next official statements from Sony to clarify this issue.
