iOS 18 will introduce a new “Vehicle Motion Tips” feature that aims to address the constant nausea associated with using devices in moving vehicles. Motion sickness, which affects many passengers, occurs when there is a mismatch between what our eyes see and what our bodies feel. This sensory conflict can turn a simple car ride into an unpleasant experience. especially when trying to read or use a device.
Apple’s innovative solution? Visual cues that fill this sensory gap. The Vehicle Motion Cues feature in iOS 18 works by displaying subtle animated dots around the edges of your device’s screen. These points move in real time depending on the vehicle’s movements. This is a way of providing your brain with visual feedback that corresponds to the movement you feel, which can reduce feelings of discomfort.
How do Vehicle Movement Hints work?
So how does your device know when you’re in a moving vehicle? Apple says it uses sensors built into the iPhone and iPad to automatically detect movement. Users can choose to enable the feature automatically when motion is detected, or manually turn it on or off via Control Center.
Although the feature is still in the beta testing phase, users who have the latest version can try it. To enable vehicle motion hints, go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion and enable “Show vehicle motion hints.”You can also add it to your Control Center for quick access.
It’s important to note that the effectiveness of this feature may vary from person to person. Motion sickness is a complex issue, and what works for one person may not work for another. However, Apple’s attempt to combat this common problem is a step in the right direction. So we’re looking forward to it. iOS 18 public release later this year.
