Earlier this year, WhatsApp started testing a brand new way to identify yourself to your contacts: a nickname. In this way, users will be able to choose privacy by hiding their phone numbers with the name they want. While the functionality has not yet been released to the general public, WhatsApp has clearly not given up on the idea and continues to develop the project.
As reported by the site WABetaInfo, the messaging service has distributed a new beta version to Android users registered in the program. This build, called 2.23.25.19, offers a very practical little option for anyone whose contact list has been replaced with nicknames. An idea that is as simple as it is effective: a search bar.

This is one of those features that makes you wonder why it wasn’t there before. In fact, the search bar works exactly as you think: you just need to type a name, phone number or therefore a nickname to find the person you want. Suffice it to say, this is a huge time saver for people who have a very extensive contact directory and will no longer have to scroll endlessly to find what they are looking for.
While WABetaInfo only talks about searching by nickname, the shared screenshot clearly shows that searching by name and number is also possible. Therefore, it is yet to be determined whether WhatsApp plans to reserve its functionality for users with nicknames. It may seem strange not to include them in the search bar, as not everyone can afford to take this risk.
