Earlier this month, the highly anticipated and long-awaited Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the original 2013 Moto X started rolling out in the United States, but we’ve heard that a few issues have caused the update to be temporarily halted.
On July 8, AT&T announced that the original Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop update has been confirmed and made available to users. This followed the Moto X outside the United States, the 2014 Moto X, and many other updates from Motorola to Android 5.1 Lollipop.
However, over the past few weeks we’ve started to see more and more complaints about the Android 5.1 update for the original Moto X. software update. Read on for more details.
yesterday AT&T announced that the original 2013 Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop update has been temporarily suspended or delayed and that the carrier and Motorola will need to review and fix a few issues before the update can resume. Android 5.1 has already arrived for the unlocked Moto X, the Sprint variant, and many more around the world.
It stands now, the original Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop update has yet to arrive on Verizon Wireless, and those who don’t get it on AT&T won’t get it until the update is resumed by the carrier.
Here’s what AT&T had to say about the situation:
Effective July 20, 2015, the Android 5.1 (Lollipop) software update for Moto X (XT1058) has been temporarily suspended. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.”
AT&T confirmed that the update was suspended, but did not provide additional details about why. Considering that the update started about two weeks ago, most owners probably already got it, but if you haven’t, the wait will be even longer now.
After reviewing some comments and forums, it seems that updating from Android 4.4 KitKat to Android 5.1 Lollipop for the original Moto X caused some issues. This is a major update to Android with a completely new look and feel, tons of new features and changes, and it looks like there are a few issues along the way.
Owners are reporting poor battery life, some weird static or noises coming from the device, and rebooting issues. There are also several reports that the device needs to “optimize apps” after every reboot, this is usually something that is only done once after major software updates. This can take more than 10-20 minutes most of the time and this is an issue that many owners complain about.
Android 5.1 Lollipop has a known memory leak issue that was fixed by the minor update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. This is causing the delay.
Those who own the original Moto X from AT&T that received the update, are you having any issues?
