In mixed martial arts, it’s pretty common to see fighters dominate in a weight class. However, many do not mark their presence in multi-weight divisions. A man who managed to make his presence felt in not one but four different weight classes, anthony johnson. Throughout his MMA career, Johnson has competed in the Welterweight, Middleweight, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight divisions. Although he had never touched UFC gold, ‘Rumble’ was one of the most feared fighters in his weight class.
Born on March 6, 1984 in Georgia, USA, Johnson was raised by his grandparents from the age of two. Coming from a family with a sports background, young Johnson attended Lassen College in California on a wrestling scholarship. ‘Rumble’ fulfilled his dream in college as he went on to become a national wrestling champion. After completing his training, Johnson worked as a bouncer until a friend suggested he do mixed martial arts.
The transition to MMA was easy for the talented Anthony Johnson, who was an avid wrestler in college. With just three fights in his professional MMA career, Johnson had already been called up to compete in the UFC. ‘Rumble’ made its debut against Chad Reiner and won the match by TKO in just 13 seconds of the first round. Johnson moved up to middleweight after suffering weight problems and mixed results at 170 pounds.
Johnson faced MMA veteran Vitor Belfort in his debut at 185 pounds. Prior to the match, ‘Rumble’ lost weight and lost the battle by choking naked from behind. Due to multiple weight losses, Johnson was removed from the UFC, and the fighter later played the Titan Fighting Championship trade, where he once again lost weight in his first victory over David Branch. This lack of weight allowed ‘Rumble’ to move to light heavyweight and once defeated Andrei Arlovski in Heavyweight.
After a brief career in other promotions, Johnson returned to compete in the UFC at £205. In the light heavyweight division, fans saw the best of Anthony Johnson. In his second run with the UFC, the deceased fighter achieved memorable victories such as: Glover Teixeira, Ryan Bader and Jimi Manuwa. In 205, Johnson twice challenged Daniel Cormier for the vacant UFC light heavyweight title. However, he was unsuccessful in his bid, and after his second failed attempt, Johnson announced his retirement from the sport. But retirement did not last long.
Four years after his last fight in the UFC, ‘Rumble’ returned to Bellator and fought the young José Augusto Azevedo. Johnson won the game by KO in the second round. To sum up his MMA career, Johnson was one of the scariest fighters in the UFC. Unlike many fighters in the higher weight classes, Anthony Johnson showed tremendous movement. Despite being a wrestler since childhood, he didn’t use ‘Rumble’ much and only finished fights with the enormous power in his hands. Johnson may no longer be alive, but MMA fans will always remember his rock-solid legacy.

When social media flooded with news of Anthony Johnson’s death, many could not believe it. However, it was later confirmed that Johnson passed away after battling an illness for a long time. A legend in the sport, Johnson’s death affected many in the mixed martial arts community. Even some of his fiercest opponents described Johnson’s kind heart and incredible nature.
Not just Cormier, but Johnson’s former boss and UFC President Dana White also spoke about his nature. Having seen thousands of fighters in his career, White also acknowledged the one-punch KO power Johnson had. White told Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, “He was always a great kid. From Usman’s descriptions, Anthony Johnson’s size can only be guessed at. Despite dealing with serious health problems, Johnson never complained and fought bravely against it. His ability to stay positive in one of the toughest situations will always have fans thinking of Johnson as the warrior he truly is.
