As our colleagues at Android Police reported, Google is currently testing with a small percentage of its users. beta version of Google Maps a brand new floating menu. Few beta testers can take advantage of it at the moment. I downloaded the latest beta of Google Maps to make sure: there are no signs of a new menu. Based on user feedback, Google may also distribute this new floating menu to other users.
Google Maps is testing a new interface on Android, here’s what will change
This new floating menu adapts to your location, usage and will offer you discover nearby placessuch as restaurants, bars, supermarkets, gas stations, pharmacies or post offices. This is an especially useful option if you’re traveling to an unfamiliar city and looking for landmarks. This isn’t really new: These recommendations are already accessible to all users via the “Discover” icon at the bottom of your smartphone screen.
If you click on one of the 6 categories highlighted by the menu that appears in the search bar, Google Maps searches for the nearest bar or restaurant to you. According to several testers involved, this floating menu only appears intermittently from the moment you place a marker on the map and can be scrolled left and right.
As the screenshots show, this new interface uses Code Theming, the famous successor to Material Design. In the coming months, Google Maps will have other new features such as augmented reality navigation and personalized recommendations.
