As you know Android Messages is now called Messages. The app has received significant updates in recent months, both to adopt the Material UI design as a dark mode and for a better search functionality. Messages 3.7 introduces two nice new features that further bridge the gap from its iPhone counterpart: sharing contacts directly within the app and a link preview screen.

When trying to add an attachment in Messages 3.7 a menu appears. This allows you to share stickers, cards as well as directly share a contact card. Only one can be shared at a time, but the recipient will receive the full vCard that adds all of that person’s information in one step. Be careful, for example it is not possible to choose a single number to send to your recipient. This takes the entire contact card as you enter it on your smartphone.
Another new feature is link previews embedded in conversations. Instead of showing a classic link, conversations now turn them into an overview card with, for example, illustration, site name, and a brief summary. Other types of content generate previews, including addresses that show the location on a map. This feature was actually already available in Messages v3.6, but it didn’t work properly. This feature has been around for a few years on iOS as well.
Smart Reply smart replies disappeared from the app under version 3.7.049, they reverted to Messages 3.7.052 which is compatible with all smartphones running minimum Android 5.0. Note that the update also fixes a crash issue with connected watches under WearOS.
