Elden Ring Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones (and Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones) are special, unique items that cannot be purchased, farmed, or unlimitedly obtained in any way. With only 13 Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones and 8 Somber Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones in the entire Elden Ring, players will have more than a small percentage of their weapons max potential +25 or +10. Of course, the weapons you get to +24 won’t be exactly weak, but for full upgrades you’ll need to bring Ancient Stones back to Hewg and add them as Smiths to the final upgrade stage.
So it’s time to hunt, Tarnished. Below, we’ve explained where to find all the locations of the Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones in the Elden Ring, including the Gloomy Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones.
Locations of all Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones in Elden Ring
There are a total of 21 Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones, 8 of which are Somber. Just click on the side links or scroll down for the ones you need. Players will definitely need to be in the late game stages of the Elden Ring to obtain these Ancient Gems, as most of them are either in late game zones that require you to know how to get to the Blessed Snowfield in the Elden Ring, or are the result of quests and questlines spanning the entire campaign. Simply put, if you’ve just downloaded Godrick or are still meddling with Caelid for the first time, you won’t be able to get these late game items anytime soon – sorry to break it.
See below for their location or scroll down/click on the relevant links to find out How to use Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones or more How to obtain Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones beyond the few provided in-game!
You can find the locations of all Ancient Dragon Ironstones in the Elden Ring here:
- On a corpse in the mouth of a giant’s skull southeast of Repose Church in the Giants’ Mountaintops.
- Reward for slaying the nameless dragon with lightning strikes on the curved path at the start of Crumbling Farum Azula.
- Reward for slaying the second nameless dragon that attacked the Southeast with red lightning from the Dragon Shrine Roof.
- It was found on a corpse north of the Dragon Sanctuary. From the North exit, take the path on the left to the narrow corridor with the dragon statues, climb the winding staircase on the right, then go South at the top and jump onto a floating pillar to reach the room with the corpse.
- Reward for killing two Night’s Calvarys guarding the caravan during the night on the southwestern border of the Conecrated Snowfields.
- Onyx Lord in the Yelough Anix Tunnel next to the miniboss on a corpse in his own room.
- Halfway through the frozen waterfall on a corpse above the Great Wyrm Theodorix boss outside Corpse’s Cave. Jump off the ledges to reach the Ancient Stone.
- On the south side of Miquella’s Haligtree is a Leonine Misbegotten with a huge ax guarding a statue. There is Stone on the corpse leaning on the statue.
- After killing Haligtree Knight Loretta, push her past the arena and down the stairs to find a tower with an elevator inside. Instead of using the elevator, go to the roof of the tower and open a chest before you get the Stone.
- A reward for the quest of Nepheli Loux. For information on how to defeat it, check out our Elden Ring Nepheli Loux questline guide here.
- If you complete Nepheli Loux’s quest, Kenneth Haight’s quest, and kill Morgott, the tall old Gostoc the Gatekeeper, who gave you the choice for the Elden Ring Stormveil gate, will also be in Godrick’s Throne Room to sell you an Ancient Stone for 20000 Rune.
- A possible questline reward for the Elden Ring Wizard Sellen questline. When the choice is either Sellen or the Witch Hunter Jerren, side with Jerren and you’ll eventually get the Stone.
- Feed all Elden Ring Deathroot locations and give them to Beast Priest Gurranq in Northern Caelid. Alternatively, after the Maliketh boss fight, attack and kill Gurranq in that temple for the Stone.
You can find all the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones locations in Elden Ring here:
- Inside a Gazebo behind the second nameless dragon that attacked with red lightning from the Dragon Shrine Roof to the Southeast (which dropped the aforementioned regular Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone).
- On the southwest side of Leyndell, especially after it became the Ashen Capital. Climb the dragon corpse to the ruined ladder beyond and go down the right edge and see a corpse in the ash with the Stone on it.
- The reward for killing the Blackened Eater Anastasia for the third and final time is now in the Blessed Snow Field (.
- In a chest at the foot of a statue opposite Mohg’s arena in Mohgwyn Palace. Warning – it is guarded by many enemies.
- After the Grace Prayer Room Site in Haligtree, run to the first path, jump onto the gazebo, then run through the sloping support beam to a small room with a chest inside. The chest contains a Stone.
- Again, after exiting the Prayer Room, use the connecting rooms to reach the outer ring on your left, patrolled by the Putrid Avatar. You don’t have to kill him – just run to the corpse on the far South side and loot for the Stone.
- While technically not obtained by killing Malenia, those who complete the Elden Ring Millicent questline and obtain Miquella’s Needle through the red flower will receive a Gloomy Ancient Dragon Iron Iron with it. For those of you having trouble with how to beat Malenia in Elden Ring, we can show you how.
- A reward given to you by Latenna for completing Latenna’s questline when you complete the Apostate Derelict.
How to use Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones for Upgrades?
Find all Elden Ring Bell Bearing locations to get all other types of Smithing Stone in our guide above!
Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones only require you to use a single stone for the final stage of upgrades, whether you use Gloomy stones or not. For example, if you plan to upgrade a weapon from +24 to +25, it will always need a single Ancient Dragon Stone, never more than that.
You also need to make sure your weapons are upgraded enough that they can be without them – if they’re not at +24 (or +9 if they’re uniquely Gloomy Weapons), so make sure you have them all. Elden Ring Smithing Stones and Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stones you need it for that.
The actual method you use these gems for upgrading your weapons is the same as using any Iron Stone – go to Hewg with weapons ready to be upgraded with them and send Gems and a few runes for payout to Hewg. I’ll give them the final upgrade. Be warned that this is irreversible! If you upgrade a weapon with any Ancient Stone, you cannot undo the upgrade or undo the Stone – it is destroyed in the process.
How to get more Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones in Elden Ring
If the Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones are gone, Gloomy or not, the only way to get more of them is to launch Journey 2, New Game Plus. Since each play of Elden Ring can have the most mentioned 21 Stones, this means you have to start over to reset the world and put them all back where they were before.
