The smartphone has truly revolutionised the way we live our lives. Communication, commerce, and work have all been transformed completely by the advent of smartphones, and now most of us can’t imagine living without ours. There are, however, still a lot of people who don’t yet have a smartphone or aren’t getting one for a number of reasons. If you’ve yet to join the smartphone revolution, then 2022 is going to be a great year to pick up a new device, as there are lots of budget and flagship options on their way to the market. Here are the best smartphones arriving in 2022.
Samsung Galaxy S22 range
Samsung’s newest smartphone range is scheduled to land on February 25th, and while two of the models aren’t a huge leap for the tech company, there’s one major new addition that should radically alter the paradigm for Samsung. The Galaxy S22 and S22+ are similar-looking to last year’s S21, but the S22 Ultra has been redesigned to resemble the Note range. It’s compatible with the S Pen, boasts a truly huge screen, and is the only device in the range that has a Quad HD+ resolution. OnePlus 10 Pro
Rather unusually, the only OnePlus flagship phone making its way to Western shores early this year is the OnePlus 10 Pro. It’s likely more people pick this one up than the basic model, which makes sense; the Pro range is excellent, and offers flagship performance and appearance for a reduced price. OnePlus phones have been creeping up in cost for a few years now, but they’re still an absolute bargain, and this latest device will boast the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, as well as an interesting Hasselblad camera layout and a better battery. If you love OnePlus, you’re almost certainly going to be impressed by the OnePlus 10 Pro.
Motorola Edge 30 Ultra
It’s official: Motorola is back in flagship-grade business. For a long time now, the legendary smartphone maker has been known for its excellent budget devices, and although it has certainly kept up the manufacture of flagship phones, these devices are arguably not as well-known as their counterparts. With the Edge 30 Ultra, though – which we’ll hopefully see in the first half of 2022 in the West – the company is reclaiming its reputation and then some. The Edge 30 Ultra has a beautiful 144Hz screen, a 60MP front-facing camera, and powerful wired charging that should restore your battery in no time at all.
Google Pixel 6a
Google’s Pixel phones are great for their price; they deliver almost flagship-level performance without flagship price being attached to them. They can achieve this because they usually come with a stock Android installation, which means no bloatware or unnecessary extra processes slowing things down. We’re expecting Google to announce a brand new lower-cost Pixel phone this year, and it’ll almost certainly be called the Pixel 6a, if past form is anything to go by. Expect it to compromise somewhat on various features sported by the Pixel 6, but not on performance, because that’s been Google’s smartphone remit recently.
Asus ROG Phone 6
We don’t know a whole lot about the Asus ROG Phone 6 yet. The device technically still hasn’t been announced, although its existence is a fairly poorly-kept secret at this stage. Asus’ ROG Phone lineup is geared towards gaming, as you might expect, so if you regularly game on your Android device, this is almost certainly going to be a worthwhile upgrade for you. It’ll likely sport the increased touch sampling feature from the ROG Phone 5s, and it’ll definitely have Snapdragon’s next flagship processor inside it as well. Otherwise, expect a high refresh rate screen and potential compromises in areas like camera quality.
A new BlackBerry
Remember BlackBerry? If you were a business user in the 1990s and 2000s, then having a BlackBerry phone was the height of sophistication. Well, now the brand is back, courtesy of investor Onward Mobility, which declared its intention to launch a brand new BlackBerry device in 2021. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to have happened, and now the future of the device is in doubt. However, we know we don’t just speak for ourselves when we say we would love to see this phone make an appearance this year. There’s just something nostalgic and satisfying about a physical keyboard, even if we don’t know that many people who would actually use this feature.
A new iPhone
We’re safely into the realms of speculation here, but we do have some renders and potential leaks to go on. If those leaks are to be believed, then the iPhone 14 lineup will once again feature three models, with the base iPhone 14 lacking a 120Hz screen yet again. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will have this feature, though, and they’ll also do away with the “notch” design of the screen, which has been controversial since it was introduced. This brings iPhone devices closer in parity to Android phones, which might upset some Apple fanatics but please others who were secretly hoping the gap would close somewhat.
