Microsoft wants to get back into the browser game with Microsoft Edge. Over the past few months, the company has added innovative features like vertical tabs, Edge Collections, Sleep tabs, and more. But goodies also come with a sacrifice in reliability. More often than ever, we’ve seen the browser throwing the ‘Hmm can’t reach this page’ error. Let’s fix the problem.
There’s a lot to like about Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge browser. Some of the GT team members have already moved from Google Chrome to Microsoft Edge. However, minor niggles like can’t reach this page error can take your memory back to the days of Internet Explorer.
1. Check Internet Connection
We know it’s a simple thing and it’s worth checking your internet connection for a flawless browsing experience in Microsoft Edge.
On your computer, open the Settings app (use Windows + I keys) and go to the Network & Internet menu.
Make sure it shows the message ‘You are connected to the Internet’. If there are any issues with it, try resetting the router or contact your local ISP.
While you’re here, try connecting to the 5.0Ghz frequency and get rid of the 2.4Ghz frequency. You can also open several tabs in other browsers and confirm an active internet connection.
2. Run the built-in Internet Troubleshooter
Are other devices connected to the same internet connection working as expected? Next, it’s time to troubleshoot the internet connection on your computer.
Microsoft offers a built-in internet troubleshooter that allows you to fix internet connection on PC. Here’s how to use it.
Stage 1: Open the Settings app on your computer.
Step 2: Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
Stage 3: Under the start and run menu, select Internet Connections.
Step 4: Run the troubleshooter and select Troubleshoot my internet connection.
The operating system will run the troubleshooter and it will fix all internet related problems on the computer.
3. Disable IPv6
When you connect to a website on your computer, it will first look for the IPv6 address. It will search for IPv4 addresses if not available.
You can disable IPv6 on your computer and it will look up IPv4 addresses directly, eliminating minor delays. By doing this, you can avoid the Microsoft Edge cannot reach this page error.
Stage 1: Press the Windows key and search for Control Panel.
Step 2: Go to the Network and Internet menu.
Stage 3: Under Network and Sharing Center, select View network status and tasks.
Step 4: Select Change adapter settings.
Step 5: Click on your current internet connection.
Step 6: Select the Wi-Fi status and open Properties.
Step 7: In the Wi-Fi Properties menu, disable the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) option and hit OK at the bottom.
4. Disable Edge Extensions
Microsoft Edge is built on Google’s Chromium engine. That is, it can officially run all Chrome extensions out of the box.
The problem is that Google does not retain the extensions available in the Chrome Web Store. Some may be outdated, infected with malware, or not actively maintained.
In such cases, using these extensions may cause Microsoft Edge to fail to reach this page on some websites.
It’s hard to pinpoint a specific extension for this issue. However, you can temporarily disable or remove all extensions in Microsoft Edge and it will fix the problem.
Stage 1: Open Microsoft Edge browser and click on the three-dot Edge menu.
Step 2: Go to the Extensions menu and select Uninstall to delete the extensions.
5. Clear Cache and Cookies
Microsoft Edge collects cache data in the background to improve page load times for your frequently visited web pages.
If your Microsoft Edge has overloaded browsing data, it may conflict with other tabs on the device and this page cannot be reached error.
Stage 1: Open Microsoft Edge and go to Settings.
Step 2: Go to Privacy, search & services.
Stage 3: Go to Clear browsing data > Choose what to clear and choose cookies and cache.
Step 4: Select the Clean now button at the bottom and restart the Edge browser.
6. Contact the Website Administrator
If the server the website is hosted on is down or experiencing problems, you will encounter the error “You cannot reach this page” in Microsoft Edge. If other websites are working fine, the problem is with the website you are trying to visit.
You can contact the website administrator or owner via email or social media channels and ask about the possible timeline for the website to work.
7. Update Microsoft Edge
The team behind Microsoft Edge often releases new builds every 14 days. So, if you are using an old version of Microsoft Edge, you can update it to the latest version and continue browsing the web.
Open Microsoft Edge Settings and go to the About menu. It will automatically search for new browser updates. Install the latest build and you’re ready.
