Instagram is a great social media platform as it focuses on sharing experiences through photos, videos, and compelling animated stories. It gave self-made internet celebrities a chance to shine, and this platform has also changed the way advertising is done.
It’s no surprise that Instagram offers some of the most comprehensive editing tools for videos and photos. However, all these tools are only available before you post anything.
Once you upload a video to your album or story, all editing features will be lost. There are some changes you can make to a submitted content, but they are very limited. Let’s take a closer look at what you can do.
Change Subtitles
One of the easiest changes you can make to an already posted video is to change the title. Whether you want to add hashtags to reach more people or write something smarter, this is one of the things you can change after posting.
- Login to your Instagram account
- Go to your profile page
- Tap the video whose subtitle you want to change.
- Tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner
- Tap Edit
- Delete existing text and write something new
- Tap Done (iOS) or check mark (Android)
After editing or removing a caption, this video will not increase. Instagram also does not send notifications to anyone about the change.
Tag New People
Just as you can tag people before and after posting in a photo, you can do the same for videos. When you get excited, it’s easy to forget to tag some friends in your post. If you accidentally left someone out, do this:
- Open the Instagram app
- Go to your profile page
- Choose a video
- Tap the three-dot menu icon
- This will bring the editing feature
- Tap the “Tag People” icon that appears in your video
- Tap someone in the video to bring up the search function
- Type that person’s name
- Tap name to select
- Tap Done (iOS) or check mark (Android)

If you tag someone, even in a previously posted video, that person will get a notification. Other people following this post will not receive notifications.
Add a place
You can also change the location. You can add a location (if you posted the video without one) or edit the existing location associated with the videos you’ve posted.

- Select the video you want from your profile page
- Tap the three dots menu
- Tap Edit
- Tap “Add Location”
- type the location
- Tap Done (iOS) or check mark (Android)
If you want to edit a location, you must first remove the old one.
- Go to the Edit feature on your video
- Tap the location name
- Tap “Remove Location” (Android) or “Change Location” (iPhone).
- Alternatively, you can tap “Find a location”.
- Tap Done (iOS) or checkmark (Android) when satisfied

Can You Change Thumbnails?
Unfortunately, this is another thing Instagram doesn’t allow you to do after a video has been posted. To have a great thumbnail, you must select one before posting the video. If you don’t know how to do this, here are the steps to follow.
- open Instagram
- tap the plus icon (or the camera icon in the upper-right corner, depending on what version of the app you’re running).
- Select a video from the library
- Select one of the cover options in the lower left corner
- Cycle through available covers and frame captures
- Tap “Next”

Editing Submitted Content Is Not Easy
As you can see, your editing options disappear when you upload and post something to Instagram. There’s not much you can do other than change the caption, change the location, and tag people you forgot before posting.
At least that’s nice to have, but a little unsatisfying given how popular this social media platform is. Better tools can be expected so far.
Are you satisfied with the current state of Instagram? If Instagram can’t provide post editing tools, would you consider using third-party apps to make changes? Leave us your thoughts in the comment section below.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I edit the whole video after posting?
Unfortunately, apart from the options we mentioned above, Instagram does not allow you to make excessive edits to your videos after you publish them. Remove any filters, stickers etc. If you want to change it, you will have to delete the video and upload it again.
Editing this way can be a problem if you no longer own the video. What you may need to do is to record the playing content on the screen and then reload it.
Can I edit an IGTV video after posting?
Similar to regular posts, IGTV videos only let you edit certain aspects. However, you will have to do this from the website as these options are not available in the app.
From the website version of Instagram, you can edit the caption and caption, but nothing more.
