The Galaxy Note 9 has shaped Samsung’s best Galaxy-branded offering to date, checking all the right boxes on the performance as well as hardware front. While Samsung is bringing a bigger battery and new connected S-Pen with it, we’re here to talk about expanding the AI capabilities on the device’s camera.
If you talk about hardware, Galaxy Note 9 (67,900 rupees), mainly copied and pasted the dual rear camera setup on the Galaxy S9 Plus. it Features a 12MP primary sensor with f/1.5 and f/2.4 dual apertures and a secondary 12MP f/2.4 telephoto lens. But this is now complete with 2 new AI-powered features – Scene Optimizer and Flaw Detection.
Galaxy Note 9’s Scene Optimizer can recognize up to 20 different types of scenes to adjust saturation, contrast, white balance and more to make photos look great. That’s why we decided to pit the Galaxy S9 Plus and Galaxy Note 9 against each other. Here is our quick comparison between the two devices.
Galaxy S9 Plus vs Galaxy Note 9
Without wasting any more time, let me tell you that the scene optimizer generally works in the Galaxy Note 9’s favor. makes photos look more vivid and ready for Instagram. The camera is absolutely fast at recognizing objects like food or nature, so just point your camera at them and instantly click photos.
As you can see below, the photo on the left has good color reproduction and detail but from the average user’s point of view, it pales in comparison to the one on the right. You can clearly tell that the photo on the right has artificial intelligence working in the background, recognizing the plant and turning the green color on, making it explode and giving it more depth. We can even see the protrusions of the leaves better in the second photo.
Moving on to a human subject I called our videographer Sharun Mittal for help, we see a slight difference in results compared to before. Here the photo on the right looks more saturated (take a look at the red shirt) and the details of the face are not clearly visible. This the photo is softer than the one on the rightwhich uses the Galaxy Note 9’s Scene Optimizer to render colors better and preserve details (even when using error detection) compared to the Galaxy S9 Plus.

Galaxy Note 9: AI vs no AI
In addition to comparing the camera specs of the Galaxy Note 9 to the Galaxy S9 Plus, we decided to test whether there was a significant difference in photo quality with the Scene Optimizer (or AI) turned on and off in the camera app.
As you can see in the attached examples below, the difference between non-AI (left) and AI (right), scene-optimized photo and non-AI photo is clear. This new artificial intelligence feature it definitely makes a difference and is easy to spot in landscape and portrait photography.
Here the image on the left was clicked with the scene optimizer turned off and this is very noticeable as the leaves and sky are pretty dull and the shadows and highlights are pretty obvious. However, the Galaxy Note 9 It has implemented the AI camera feature in the image on the right and the leaves and sky look quite saturated (green and blue colors appear) but shadows are no longer clearly visible.

Just like we saw on the Galaxy S9 Plus, the perspective with human portraits is exactly the same, but the two images differ in terms of color temperatures – cooler on the left and warmer on the right. The non-AI photo on the left is less saturated but lacks detail, while the AI-powered photo on the right renders color better and captures details better.
The screen optimizer works its magic at recognizing objects, but in some scenarios it’s hard to spot differences between photos – which isn’t the case with all comparisons to the Galaxy S9 Plus. Examples of AI vs. non-AI comparative photos showing nature, indoor space, portraits, animals, and more:
Final Verdict: Does AI Scene Optimizer Make a Difference?
As you may have observed before, the AI-powered Scene Optimizer camera feature of the Galaxy Note 9 is definitely working and will help users click better pictures. While Scene Optimizer often exaggerates colors, making a photo look too saturated (especially when shooting nature or landscapes), it handles other scenarios much better.
Thus, we can cheerfully conclude: Galaxy Note 9’s AI makes the difference and helps you click through Instagram-worthy pictures better than the Galaxy S9 Plus – it’s a definite upgrade, but it doesn’t require an enthusiastic $1000 outlay.
