Ken Mauersued the NBA organization after a former referee was fired for refusing to receive COVID vaccines. Mauer claims that her refusal to get vaccinated was because of religion.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world, many top businesses have ensured their employees comply with health safety measures, including getting vaccinated. The NBA is no different, with the basketball organization demanding that its employees, players, and referees be vaccinated to remain a part of the world’s largest basketball organization.
Although most have decided to implement these measures, some are still stubborn about vaccinations and refuse to have them. Kyrie Irving is a name that immediately comes to mind when it comes to getting into trouble for not getting vaccinated. Former NBA referee Ken Mauer was fired from the league for refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
According to the claim of the 35-year-experienced referee, he refuses to be vaccinated on religious grounds. Mauer and two other referees who were fired felt they had been treated unfairly by the NBA and decided to sue the association. Jonathan Stempel. Along with Ken Mauer, Mark Ayotte and Jason Phillips have filed a complaint in Manhattan federal court about being unfairly compelled to abide by the NBA’s “hygienic norms.”
“None of the injuries complained of by the plaintiffs would have resulted if the NBA had not taken on the task of compelling faith-based conscientious objectors to abide by secular norms.” Read the senior reviewers’ complaint.

Ken Mauer shocked that his belief in Jesus Christ kept him from refereeing NBA games

Apart from taking things to court, Ken Mauer made sure to vent his anger towards the organization in his podcast interview with Jason Whitlock. The former referee, who was not vaccinated for religious reasons, talked about how unfair it was for the NBA to kick him out for not getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Mauer explains some details about vaccine authorization from the National Basketball Referees Association.
The former referee says that in a union of 73 referees, only 4 referees were left unvaccinated at the beginning of the season. While all four referees had their own reasons, Mauer refused to be vaccinated simply because he believed in Christianity.
“I never thought that my faith in our Lord Jesus Christ would prevent or stop me from refereeing NBA basketball games or get in my way.” exclaimed Ken Mauer in his interview. “Not just me, other people too” added. Mauer has been a referee in the NBA since the 1986-87 season and was fired in 2021-2022.
