The seven-time all-star player was seized by Russian Customs while possessing vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She was named defensive player of the year twice and was a seven-time all-star, making him one of the greatest WNBA players of all time.

Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison in August after being convicted of serious narcotics charges in Russia. Griner’s legal team filed an appeal next month questioning the veracity of his nine-year sentence.

He was entitled to a full 10-year prison sentence, but criminals convicted in similar cases across Russia received reduced sentences and, in some cases, parole. He was subjected to harsh conditions in a penal colony known as the worst prison in Russia.
