The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus come with the latest and greatest hardware, but that doesn’t mean they’re immune to performance issues.
We continue to see complaints about hardware and software issues plaguing iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus users around the world. Some of these issues are minor bugs, others, like performance issues, are preventing people from using it daily.
There is no need to panic if your iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus starts lagging, freezing, crashing or randomly restarting. There is a very good chance that you can fix the problem within a few minutes.
This guide will show you how to fix iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus performance issues. These solutions have worked for us in the past and will help you maintain a fast iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus in the future.
Restart Your iPhone 8
If your iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus starts to show lag, the first thing we recommend is a quick reboot. You can do this by holding the power button and turning off the phone, or you can do a hard reset.
This process will only take a few seconds, but there is a possibility to fix the problems you are facing with your device. This is the first thing to try.
Browse Your Storage
If you’ve owned an iPhone before and brought a replacement for your new iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, it might be a good idea to do some cleaning.
If you have brought a lot of apps/data on your iPhone 8, the device’s storage may be messy. This clutter can slow down your phone, so you’ll want to take care of the items you store on your device.
Checking your iPhone 8’s storage is easy. Go to your settings and tap on iPhone Storage. There you will see in detail what is taking up space on your phone. Delete what you don’t need.
iOS 12, the software that powers the iPhone 8, will also give you suggestions, and some of you might want to take his advice.
If you haven’t restored from a backup, you’ll want to take a close look at the apps and files you’ve downloaded to your new iPhone. This will help keep your device fresh and fast.
Update Your iPhone 8
If you’re running an older version of iOS, consider upgrading to the latest update.
You can check for a new version of iOS 12 through your settings. Go to Settings > Software update. If you’re feeling lazy, read the reviews before downloading.
Update Your Apps
If your apps are starting to give you problems, make sure you’re updated with the latest bug fixes.
Developers are rolling out iOS 12 support updates, and they can help fix (or damage) whatever you’re dealing with on your iPhone 8.
Before downloading an update to your iPhone 8, go to the App Store and read reviews from other iPhone 8 users. If the reviews for the latest version are mostly good, consider installing the update.
Kill Automatic Downloads
Automatic updates are useful if you are very worried about keeping your apps up to date. While automatic downloads are helpful, they can also cause your phone to malfunction and slow down.
If you’re totally having trouble checking the App Store and updating your apps manually, try disabling Automatic Downloads on your iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus.
To do this, go to your Settings app > iTunes & App Store. Once there, you’ll want to turn off Updates located in the Automatic Downloads section. If you can manage, turn off other options as well.
Clear Browser Cookies and Data
Clearing your browser’s cookies and data regularly frees up memory and can help speed up your iPhone 8.
If you use Safari often, go to Settings > Safari > and where it says Clear History and Website Data. Tap.
Tapping this button removes your browsing history, cookies, and other data from Safari. The history will also be cleared from all devices signed into your iCloud account. If you’re ready for that, tap Clear History and Data again.
If you’re a Google Chrome user, you’ll want to enter the app and tap the three vertical circles in the top-right corner.
On the next screen, tap Settings > Privacy > Clear Browsing Data. You can now choose the ones you want to delete. If you’re noticing a serious lag, you may want to start from scratch.
In this case, select them all and then click Clear Browsing Data.
Reduce Animations
Animations make your iPhone 8’s software look nice, but you can try limiting them to improve your device’s performance.
If your animations start to ripple or your iPhone starts to slow down, go to Settings app > General > Accessibility and turn on Reduce Motion.
You’ll also want to reduce transparency and blur effects. To do this, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > tap Increase Contrast and then tap the toggle to turn on the Reduce Transparency function.
Stop Background Refresh
With Background App Refresh enabled, your iPhone 8 will constantly work to keep your apps up to date with new data. If you don’t want or need your apps to run in the background, try turning this feature off. It can help your phone’s performance.
To do this, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn off Background Refresh. This kills the feature.
You can also review your application list one by one and make choices according to the situation. This will be tedious, but if you want some app to refresh data in the background, it’s the only way to go.
Disable Widgets
Widgets are useful, but when active they make your phone work. If you are not using widgets, try turning them off.
On the home screen of your iPhone 8, swipe right to see your Widgets. Scroll to the end of the list and tap Edit.
On the next screen you will likely see a list of services and applications. These are your active and inactive widgets. To disable a widget on your device, tap the red circle with the white line, then tap Uninstall.
You can remove as many Widgets as you want and if you don’t see any improvement in the performance of your iPhone 8, you can turn them back on at any time.
Fresh Start
If you can’t or don’t want to take your device to an Apple Store, you may want to go nuclear.
Factory resetting your iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus will wipe the device, but it can improve all-around performance of the device.
Before you reset your iPhone 8 factory defaults, make sure your data is properly backed up via iTunes or Apple’s iCloud service. That way, if you don’t see any improvement, you can easily restore it.
After backing up everything properly, go to Settings > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings to start the process.
