Due to the Corona Virus epidemic, millions of people are forced to work from home. Now is the perfect time to meditate, build habits, learn new skills, read books, start your daily journey, and apply some of them to your daily routine. In short, keep a journal using the good old pen and paper combination. It is boring and does not provide security or function. Day One, Journey, Momento etc. You can create location entries, add pictures, add passcode lock, sync across devices and more. And that too without wasting any paper in the process.
The Apple App Store is filled with dozens of diary apps that let you jot down your thoughts at the end of the day. Among them, Day One and Momento are two of the best practices and are highly respected.
In this post, we’ll compare Day One and Momento based on several factors, including UI, features, theme, security, cross-platform usability, price, and more. Lets start.
Cross-Platform Availability
Day One is available on all Apple hardware, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and even the Apple Watch. By the way, Momento is exclusive to iOS only.
user interface
Both apps provide the classic iOS bottom bar menu with main functions. I found Day One better than Momento in terms of overall fluency.
Day One, use the classic hamburger menu and Blue/White theme to get started. I like that all functions are accessible, except for the search menu. The app cleverly uses haptic feedback throughout the UI.

In terms of customization, one can change the app icon from the Settings menu, apply a dark theme, change the font style and size.
Momento uses light brown theme to give you a real everyday feel. The app also has Red, Green, Gold, Blue, Black, etc. from Settings. It also supports various themes such as

The Settings, Calendar, and Search menu are at the top, which is pretty hard to reach.
Adding a New Entry
This is the most important part of any diary app. On Day One, either tap on options from home or select the ‘+’ button. You can use templates (we’ll talk about these later) or create an audio, photo intro, add drawings, text or scan a document.
The entry adds the current location, time, weather, altitude, and rendering device by default. I like that it adds small details before the user starts typing.

You can change the font color, add bullets, numbers, checkboxes, integrate comment and even add code to an entry. The add option at the bottom allows you to add a photo, video, login and more. Press the Done button when you are finished typing and the entry will be displayed at home.
Momento isn’t as smart as Day One. Requires manual entry to add a location. There is no way to integrate weather information. People, tags and photos can be added to the note.

I like that Momento separates the inserted inputs into a chain of events. It doesn’t go with the usual list path. The app groups the entries by day and shows them in ascending order.
Login Organization and Search
Day One makes it easy to find the note you’re looking for. You can use the search function or go to the filter menu to search the note by photo, video, audio or PDF. It also shows all uploaded files in one menu.

Day One has integrated the Maps functionality into the app. You can tap on it and see the created notes via location on the map. To view notes, simply tap the location pin. The calendar plugin helps you view entries by day.

Momento is simple. From the home screen, you can tap the calendar icon above and it will let you select notes by day. You can also customize the home screen by day, month or year. Both apps did a commendable job with the intro organization and you’ll have no trouble finding a note.
Additional features
Day One and Momento are packed with tons of functions to enhance the overall experience. Day One lets you create multiple diaries for health, parenting, travel, self-care and more. It allows you to import entries from Instagram, Fitbit, Foursquare with the help of IFTTT with social media integration.
Day One counts every minute spent in the app as mindful minutes and helps you import that data into the Apple Health app. It also supports Siri Shortcuts to create entries via Siri.

The app offers built-in templates to end the day with a summary, plan, ideas, and more.
Momento’s Events function is a must-have for everyone. You can create an event like ‘Travel to Italy’, add a start and end date and write down your travel experience in this event. Social feed tab implemented better. However, IFTTT integration would be great.
You can directly import events, Check-ins, Recorded Music, Stories and Reading History from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Spotify, Goodreads, Web Feed and more. Go to the Feed menu and link the social account to Momento.

Price
Day One and Momento follow the freemium model here. Day One offers the basic features for free, but IFTTT integration, Templates, cross-platform syncing, and various customization options are included in a $40 annual subscription.
Momento is priced at $20 per year and unlocks functions like the theme engine, Face ID support, unlimited feeds, and more.
Start Fixing Your Thoughts
As you can see from the comparison above, Day One and Momento are capable journaling apps. With Day One, you get better UI, more features, and better customization options. Momento leaves Day One behind with its outstanding Notes organization and social integration.
