Apple has pulled the iOS 15.1 update out of beta and is now available for download.

Unlike the previous version of iOS 15 (iOS 15.0.2), iOS 15.1 is a landmark upgrade and a much bigger update than its predecessor, iOS 15.0.2. It brings a mix of new features, fixes and improvements to iPhone.

iOS 15.1 Review

If your iPhone is currently running iOS 15.0.2, you will see the smallest iOS 15.1 download size.

For iOS 15.0.2 users, the iOS 15.1 download is quite large. For iPhone users upgrading from the previous version of iOS 15, there will likely be over 1GB of download.

The exact iOS 15.1 download size depends on your iPhone model and currently running iOS version. So, if your iPhone is running an older version of iOS, you’ll see a larger download as your iOS 15.1 update includes changes from the iOS updates you skipped.

If you’re upgrading from iOS 15.0.2, the installation takes less than 10 minutes to complete. It previously took about seven minutes to install on an iPhone X running iOS 15.0.2.

iOS 15.1 Issues

iOS 15.1 is causing issues for some iPhone users. Some of these issues are brand new, others ported from iOS 15.0.2 and older versions of iOS.

The current list of iOS 15-related issues includes loading issues, UI lag, Exchange issues, first- and third-party app issues, hotspot issues, touchscreen issues, Touch ID and Face ID issues, charging issues, and stuttering.

Apple stopped signing in iOS 15.0.2; This means that if iOS 15.1 is causing problems, you cannot downgrade your phone to the previous iOS 15 version. You also cannot downgrade from iOS 15.0.2.

Keep this in mind if you’re having a good experience on iOS 15.0.2 or older. Once you upgrade to iOS 15.1, you cannot go back.

iOS 15.1 Update: What’s New

iOS 15.1 is a milestone upgrade, the first for iOS 15, and brings some major changes to the iPhone. Here is the full list of changes to the ship:

SharePlay is probably the most notable change on the board, and Apple broke ground the number of third-party apps that are particularly compatible. Compatible apps include NBA, TikTok, Twitch, Paramount+ and Showtime.

The company says support is coming for apps like BET+, Disney+, ESPN, HBO Max, Hulu, MasterClass, Pantaya, Pluto TV, and Starz.

iOS 15.1 Jailbreak

developer teams behind checkra1n and UnC0ver jailbreaking tools have released versions compatible with newer versions of iOS 14, but only Checkra1n (currently in beta) is compatible with iOS 14.5. They do not yet support iOS 15.1, iOS 15.0.2, iOS 15.0.1, iOS 15.0, iOS 14.8, iOS 14.7.1, iOS 14.7, iOS 14.6 or iOS 14.5.1.

The latest version of unC0ver is compatible with newer iPhones, including the iPhone 12 series. This is great news if you’ve been waiting to jailbreak your new phone. Unfortunately it is only compatible with versions up to iOS 14.3.

There is no way to downgrade your phone to iOS 14.5 or earlier; this means you are out of luck if you upgrade or have already upgraded to newer iOS software.

Apple has confirmed that a new version of iOS 15 and iOS 15.2 is currently in beta before it’s generally available. The company has yet to confirm a specific release date, but it should drop sometime before the end of the year.
