There are two options you can use to customize your iPhone ringtone. For the first option, you can perform the process from your Mac and using a Lightning to USB cable to connect your iPhone to it. Before renaming a file to m4r you will need GarageBand to export it in AAC format. You can also have fun with the different parameters and instruments of the app to create a piece to your liking, but be careful and opt for a relatively short piece with a maximum of 30 seconds. In detail, here are the sequential actions you need to perform:

  • Right click on your ringtone file and rename it exactly by going through: “. m4a” to “. m4r » (this will make the iPhone recognize it as a ringtone file).
  • get yours usb cable for lightning and connect your iPhone to your Mac.
  • choose your iPhone Finder.
  • Then drag the ringtone file into the Finder window.

For this second method, you can use GarageBand directly on your iPhone so you can create your new ringtone using just your Apple smartphone. After you finish rendering in GarageBand, you can go to the project browser.
