How to Remove Microphone Icon from Keyboard on iPhone and iPad

When you don’t feel comfortable typing using your fingers, the always reliable “Dictation” feature comes to your rescue. Simply press the little microphone button and dictate your terms! What if you don’t use Dictation much and your fingers tend to accidentally activate it more often when typing on a QuickType keyboard? Do not disturb, there is a quick way to remove the microphone icon from the keyboard on iPhone and iPad.

Although I like dictation, I prefer to disable it especially when I’m not using it. With the microphone hidden, fingers seem to have a little more freedom to slide when using the Flick Typing feature. Anyway, it’s good to have the option to show/hide microphone on iOS keyboard whenever you want. Let me show you how it works!

1. Start Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Now, tap on General.

3. Next, tap on it. Keyboard.

4. Next “Enable Dictation” Select the option and turn off its toggle.

5. Next, a confirmation menu will appear saying something like:

The information that Dictation uses to respond to your requests is also used by Siri and remains on Apple servers unless Siri is turned off. Tap on Turn off Dictation to confirm the action

Note:

  • Make sure to turn off Siri if you want your requests to be removed from Apple servers as well.
  • simply go to: Settings -> Siri & Search. After that, turn off both the Listen for Hey Siri and Press Side for Siri toggles to disable the personal assistant on your device.

That is all! The change will take effect immediately. To check if the microphone is gone, move Apple’s QuickType keyboard inside any app like Messages and Notes.

Note:

  • In most cases, the microphone icon will disappear as soon as you disable Dictation. But in some rare cases, it may stay there even after you turn off Dictation on your iOS device. If this is the case, restart your device.

If you want to show the microphone icon on the Apple QuickType keyboard again, all you have to do is go back to the keyboard setting and then finally turn on the “Enable Dictation” switch.
