There’s no denying that Samsung makes some of the best flagship smartphones on the market, and recently the company has also been offering some pretty impressive budget offerings like the Galaxy A50. However, there is a big problem with Samsung phones that can be a big annoyance for users; phones save screenshots in the DCIM folder, which is technically reserved for camera-only photos. So if you use Google Photos to back up your camera roll, you will find that your screenshots are also backed up there, which can be really annoying. Fortunately, we have a solution. We’ve created a Tasker script that automatically moves your screenshots from the default folder to any other folder you can specify. Interested? You can do this like this:
Save Screenshots Outside Camera Roll
Tasker is a pretty powerful app even for non-rooted phones and I’ve used it quite a bit. However, I will detail the whole process step by step, so even if you’ve never used Tasker before, you’ll be able to get it ready in no time.
- First download Tasker ($2.99) on your phone. It is a paid app, but there is a 7-day free trial that you can download. here. Also, go to the Files app and create a new folder where you want the screenshots to be saved. I’m creating a ‘Screenshots’ folder in the root directory.
- Launch the application and Tap the “+” button bottom right. Now, tap on ‘Activity.’
- Tap on ‘FileTap ‘ and then ‘File Changed.’
- On the next screen, tap the search icontap on ‘DCIM.’
- Then, long press on ‘Screenshots’ To select the folder Once this is done, just tap the back button in the upper left corner of the application.
- Now, tap on ‘new missionThe ‘ button pops up automatically and gives the task any name. I’m going withscreenshot carrier.’ At that time, tap the checkmark.
- On the next screen, tap the ‘+’ button bottom left and Select file.’
- Tap on ‘List Files‘ and then tap Search icon next to ‘dir’.
- go ‘DCIM’ and then long press ‘Screenshots.’
- Under ‘Variable’ title, enter something like ‘Folders’ Don’t delete the (% sign) and tap the back button in the top left. Tasker can tell you some things about local and global variables, just tap ‘OK’.
- Tap the ‘+’ button again and tap on it once again. ‘File.’
- choose ‘Movement’, and tap on ‘Variable’ symbol.
- Here, Select variable ‘%files’ we just created and add a “(1)” him.
- Next, tap on ‘Call’ Next to ‘To’ and long press ‘Screenshots’ The folder we originally created. Once done, tap the back button in the upper left.
- Your task should look like the screenshot below. If not, you can change things according to the steps described above. Once matched, tap the top left back button again and make sure the quest is enabled.
That’s it, Tasker will now automatically move all your screenshots to the new ‘Screenshots’ folder you have created (including any old screenshots you may have taken on your phone). An error notification may appear when you take a screenshot, but don’t worry, your screenshots are being saved in the new folder.
Note: If you use Samsung’s ‘Smart Screenshot’ feature, you can no longer use it as the screenshot will not be saved in the default folder. However, if you need to use it, you can always disable the Tasker task and continue with your screenshots.
Other Apps You Can Try
If Tasker isn’t something you’re comfortable with, you can try an app called PinSync ($0.99) claims to have stopped syncing screenshots to the cloud. I haven’t tried the app myself, because I’m not entirely comfortable installing another app and letting it access my internal storage. Tasker is definitely more reliable.
Also Automate (Free) is similar to Tasker, but probably easier to use. Some people have also stated that adding a “.nomedia” file to the screenshots folder will fix the problem, but then your screenshots will not appear in your local gallery either.
Bonus: try MIUI and Poco F1
While testing phones for this article, I found out that Poco F1 and other MIUI phones also save screenshots in DCIM folder. Since we are using Tasker to solve this, it should work on any phone. Feel free to try this on your phone and let me know how it works.
Save Your Screenshots Outside of Camera Roll
Well, that’s pretty much it when it comes to ensuring your screenshots don’t mess with your Google Photos backups. I tested this task on my personal Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ at work and it works just fine, so I’m pretty sure it will work on your phone too.
