At the WWDC 2019 keynote, Apple introduced the upcoming operating system for the iPhone family and 7th generation iPod Touch – iOS 13, and released a developer beta for developers to try and test their apps. Well, if you can’t wait for the next iOS iteration to be released this fall, here’s how to install the iOS 13 developer beta on your iPhone:
Prerequisites
Before you start the installation, there are a few things you need:
- An Apple Developer account. Without it, you won’t be able to access the developer beta.
- Take a backup of your iPhone. Developer betas and betas of all kinds can be problematic and you may need to wipe your phone. Keep a spare handy.
- A MacBook running macOS 10.15 Catalina (for some reason) or Xcode Beta 11.
Install iOS 13 on your iPhone
Usually though it is possible to go to the Apple Developer website and install a profile on your iPhone to get the developer beta as an OTA update. However, this option is not available this time, so we will download a restore image and install it via a MacBook.
- Go to Apple Developer Web siteand sign in with your developer account. click “Develop” and then “Downloads.”
- Scroll down to see’iOS 13 betaClick on ‘ and ‘see all‘.
- Simply download the restore file for the iPhone model you plan to install the beta version on. In my case, I downloaded the image for iPhone X.
- After the download is complete, connect your iPhone to Mac. press now ‘Choice’ and click on ‘Update’. This will allow you to select a downloaded update file that you can flash on your iPhone.
- Select the image you downloaded and click ‘Open’.
That’s it, the update will flash on your iPhone and you’ll be running iOS 13 in no time. You may need to enter your iPhone passcode several times during installation, but other than that, you don’t need to do much.

Check out iOS 13 right now
This is basically how you can install iOS 13 developer beta on your iPhone. Note that this is a beta software so it may contain bugs and issues so please do not install it on your daily driver iPhone. Even Apple warns you against this with the following note on the download page itself: “Important Note for Thrill-Seekers: If you’re interested in living on the edge and trying out the great new features in iOS 13, we highly recommend waiting for the many bug fixes and improvements that will arrive in public beta next month.”
Anyway, if you have an iPhone that you’re ready to wipe as needed, go ahead and install iOS 13 to check out all the new features like Dark Mode, redesigned apps, and more.
