If you’re using a Gmail account, your natural reaction when setting up your iPhone’s email would be to set it to “Gmail”. If you want your new emails delivered right away, that’s not exactly what you want to do.
What you will want to do is to set up your mail as a Microsoft Exchange account. This will work on all iOS devices including iPad and iPod touch.

This much! Instead of checking your new emails every 15 minutes, you’ll receive alerts as soon as they’re sent.
