Need some Valheim tips? If you’re a new player it can be difficult to get off to a smooth start in Valheim as the game doesn’t put you off. True, Odin’s raven will occasionally appear and give you some clues, but there’s a lot to figure out on your own. For example; Which items will be collected first after spawning? How to make an ax? And how can you put a campfire next to your bed if they can’t be placed somewhere?
Here’s a Valheim beginner’s guide to answering these questions and more.

1. Enter different worlds in Valheim to get resources you can’t find
Even if you prefer to stay connected to the first server you enter, it is useful to know this from the beginning: You can take your character to the world of Valheim you want without losing your stats or items.
You should definitely use this to your advantage when collecting resources later on. Can’t find any stones around your base? Or maybe there is a famine of deer? Then return to the main menu and enter another world with many of these resources.
2. Get the board and stones to start in Valheim
This may come as no surprise to those familiar with the survival genre, but the first thing you need to do after spawning in the world of Valheim is to gather wood and stones. See the little trees? Punch them with your bare hands until they turn into wooden logs.
On the other hand, stones need to be removed. You can only get the small ones, so watch out for them as you walk through the woods.
While collecting these resources, it won’t be long before you encounter your first enemies; Grays. Don’t worry too much about them though, Greylings are pretty weak and a few punches will kill them.
3. Craft ax and hammer to create your first base
You can open your Inventory and Production menu with Tab. The first tool you need is the stone ax: To do this, use 5 pieces of wood and 4 stones. This will help you cut down trees much faster. This is a good thing because we will need a lot of wood to build the first Valheim base.
Next, use 3 boards and 2 stones to craft a hammer. Equip this vehicle to start building your base. Right click opens the menu with different building materials, left click places a material and middle mouse button lets you disassemble any part for free. Also check out Valheim crafting progress to see what else you can do and when.
4) How to make a Valheim bench and create a construction site
Once you have your basic tools, the next thing you need is a Valheim bench. This will unlock many new crafting options and create a space for you to build on. Equip the hammer and then go to the ‘crafting’ tab to find the recipe for the workbench. Requires 10 wood.
Once you have placed the bench you will see a large white circle surrounding it. This is your construction site. If you want to build somewhere else, either place a second bench or simply disassemble and reinstall.
5. How to build the Valheim base
But don’t think it’s over yet! Before you can actually use your countertop, it needs to be protected by a base. Placing a simple wall and a piece of roof will suffice, but you can also start in a suitable Viking house.
Most buildings in Valheim require a foundation, as the forest floor is quite uneven. Use posts and beams to support your floors and walls. Keep in mind that this base will be attacked often after you defeat the first boss, so make sure it’s solid. You have to put your precious loot inside.
6. How to build a Valheim respawn point with a bed and campfire
With the Valheim base finished, now it’s time to place a bed. This isn’t just useful for skipping the night; it is also your special Valheim respawn point. You can find the building description by attaching the hammer and then clicking the ‘furniture’ tab.
There’s only one problem though: You need a campfire close to your bed, but the bed is inside your wooden base and the campfire cannot be placed on wood. Solution? Place the campfire near your bed, but outside your base. It doesn’t matter if there is a wall between them!
7. How to find and eat food in Valheim
Your character is probably hungry by now. Fortunately, raspberry bushes, mushrooms and animals in Valheim are not that hard to find. There’s only one tricky thing you need to know; You cannot eat the same food twice in a row.
It would seem that the Vikings value a varied diet, so you can eat 1 raspberry and 1 mushroom at the same time, but not 2 raspberries. You will have to wait until the food icon in the lower left corner of the screen starts to flash or disappears. This means you can eat the food again.
8) Find and defeat the first Valheim boss, Eikthyr
If you want to advance in Valheim, you have to beat the bosses. The first boss, Eikthyr, is located near your default spawn point. Once you find its location, you must offer a deer reward to summon it.
It is not wise to fight Eikthyr right away. First, make sure you have the Best Valheim weapons like an upgraded bow or Valheim flint blade. You should also equip the best Valheim armor. Killing wild boar and deer will provide you with the necessary supplies. Finally, make sure you are fully fed, healed, and rested. After defeating Eikthyr, you can bring his trophy to the default spawn point to get better stats.
9. A few important tips before entering Valheim
A few last things to keep in mind as you begin your Valheim adventure:
- Falling trees can kill you. When you notice a tree falling, move away immediately.
- A quick way to gather a lot of wood in Valheim is to place a bench next to an abandoned building and dismantle the foundations. With just a few clicks you will get a huge stack.
- always use Valheim repair Options to repair your items before leaving your base. If you click on the counter, you can repair your items for free (no additional resources required).
- Using roll-dodge will help you win many tough battles. First you need to switch to ‘sneak’ mode (using Ctrl) and then press shift. A quick and easy way to avoid taking damage.
- Skills are only upgraded by using ability (running, swimming, etc.), but can be reduced by dying.
- Pigs don’t run, but deer do. So start by hunting boars for skin scraps with a melee weapon; then use them to make bows and hunt deer for their skins.
- These aren’t arrows flying at you, just the wind.
And that’s all. You’re more ready than ever to be in the Viking world of Valheim. Eikthyr better watch out!
