Valve announced the introduction of save game functionality on Steam. This “Allows users to record, rewind, trim, save and share videos of their gaming experiences”, explains the editor. Until now, to benefit from such a facility it was necessary to go through a third-party program.
THE background recording mode It continuously saves your gameplay to your chosen storage device without requiring player intervention. In this case, you can set hard drive space limits so that you don’t fill up your storage. You choose a duration and quality, and that’s it. When your allocated quota is full, the oldest playtime is replaced with the newest playtime. A manual save mode is also provided if you don’t need to save your entire game session.
Tools for editing and sharing your saves from Steam
Saving your games gives you the opportunity to review your performance to improve it, or to relive a key cutscene or dialogue with an NPC. Viewing is available from the Steam interface for all games. To help you find your way around more easily, Steam offers: a timeline in the recording, with timestamps. These are automatically generated by the system when you take a screenshot or get an achievement. Manual hints can be added directly by the player, or by the game itself; Valve provides an API for developers to do this.

Players can record video clips of interest or edit, share and export the recorded content as MP4 files. Various file transfer options are available, for example via the Steam mobile app, QR code or temporary Steam link.
This feature is available on both the Steam client for PC and Steam Deck. Since it’s still in beta, you need to sign up now to benefit from it. To do this, simply go to: Settings > Interface > Client Beta Participation then choose a beta version. To enable the option, go to Settings > Game Recording, then choose between background or manual recording.
