Unless the video game industry seems particularly inclined to preserve its history, Sony is one of the most dangerous manufacturers in this regard. Indeed, it is common knowledge that the latter don’t want to keep their old console alive, as evidenced by the slow killing of the PS3 and PS Vita. Therefore, it was a bit of a surprise that we discovered the latest patent made by the Japanese firm.
The document titled “Systems and Methods for Converting Legacy to Updated Code” appears to indicate that Sony is looking for a way to do this. match old PlayStation accessories with new modelsor, in theory, the PS5. One diagram in particular gives us fleas in our ears. Above we see a few retro accessories around a system we imagine Sony will allow to be used on its newest console.
Are PS3 accessories really compatible with PS5?
Among these many accessories we find in particular: double shock 3Various hardware besides PS3’s legendary controller PS Eye, PS Move, PS Mouse and even PSP Go. At first glance, all this looks pretty cool. As rumors of PS3 and PS5 backward compatibility increase, Sony may add icing on the cake by allowing gamers to use period accessories.
However, it is better not to put the cart before the horse. To start, patent never mentions PS5. Rather, everything implies a self-addressing system. For PlayStation Plus subscribers, indeed gives access to the entire catalog of retro games – PS3 in particular – in its Premium formula. The patent also includes a diagram representing the manufacturer’s cloud gaming system.
So it’s hard to say what Sony’s real plans are in this area or whether this patent will really lead to anything. Since we know the manufacturer’s relative disinterest in preserving retro games, be careful. But who knows, repeated calls from players might finally pay off.
