The Guardians of the Galaxy collaboration is a reasonable question to ask if you’ve watched the footage available for the game, when you can see five different heroes taking part in the same scenes. This query depends on whether some of these characters are NPCs or have the Guardians of the Galaxy multiplayer option so you can split their quests among a group of friends when playing together. There are answers for you here, but unfortunately if you’re hoping for the Guardians of the Galaxy collaboration, the news isn’t good.
Guardians of the Galaxy co-op or multiplayer?
No, Guardians of the Galaxy does not have co-op or multiplayer capabilities at the time of writing. It’s not even playable online – singleplayer only, and as far as we know, Eidos or Square Enix have no plans to change that in the future.
To be clear, multiple characters you may have seen in trailers or commercials are all controlled by a single player. Specifically, this player plays as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, but you have the option to enter and exit the battle, such as giving instructions to your allies, slowing down time, highlighting an opponent or object, and giving a specific command to perform later. You can’t actually play either as other Guardians or as anyone else, but instead frame you as the leader of a team of (mostly) obedient NPCs.
Will Guardians of the Galaxy be online co-op or multiplayer?
We don’t currently know of the developers’ plans to include an online, co-op or multiplayer element, or even classic couch co-op. While not impossible, the addition of such a feature seems unlikely, as the strictly single-player nature of Guardians of the Galaxy leaves little room for this type of expansion. Or simply, Square Enix’s idea of making Marvel-focused online co-op games may have been tainted since the Avengers game’s release.
Nothing is impossible though, and perhaps adjustments will be made in the future, given some interest in the idea of a shared Guardians of the Galaxy game. Regardless, we’ll be sure to update this page when we hear more about this from the developers.
