‘The Last of Us’: Did you know there was almost a comic about Ellie’s mom?

“The Last of Us” has always been an undeniable success in the gaming world. Currently, the game franchise has 95 approval points on Metacritic for the first game and 93 points for the second. Thus, consolidating itself as one of the best franchises in the entire gaming world.

Recently, the story of “The Last of Us” has spread to an even wider audience, thanks to the release of the live-action adaptation in the form of a series by HBO. Logically, as all players already know, the story is excellent and received a perfect adaptation by the producer.

It’s almost impossible that you’re reading this article and haven’t heard about the series or the game yet. But, in case that’s a possibility, let’s get to the summary.

The series and the game tell the story of two main characters, Joel and Ellie. In this world, there was an apocalypse that turned people into monsters, through an infection by the Cordyceps fungus.

This fungus infects the host and takes over its mind, acting on the nervous system and completely controlling its body, transforming it into a type of meat fungus.

However, Ellie is immune to this virus, and Joel is tasked with taking the girl to a laboratory where they can develop a cure.

Anyway, as we explained, the game was a huge success since its release. Therefore, the creator, Neil Druckmann, wanted to expand the universe with a comic book telling the story of Ellie’s mother.

However, Naughty Dog did not allow this production to proceed, even though a cover and a name were created for the comic. The publication would take place through the great Dark Horse, publisher of great hits such as “Hellboy”, “The Umbrella Academy”, “Conan”, among others.

However, the story of Anna WilliamsEllie’s mother, has not been told until now. But, as viewers saw in the HBO adaptation, we got the scene of Ellie’s birth, which brings up the theory of how the character has immunity to the fungus.

This theory says that, because Anna was bitten before cutting the umbilical cord with her daughter, Ellie grew up with the fungus in her body, so that it adapted so as not to be aggressive to the girl’s system.

Therefore, when Ellie is infected with a new fungus, the Cordyceps that already exists in her body sends signals to the new contaminant, indicating that that body is already occupied.

However, so far, the author has not confirmed this theory, but, with the resounding success of the series, perhaps we will be able to see the answers to Ellie’s immunity in the comics.
