Another Turma da Mônica comic will be released soon and in it we will meet Bernando, a character with dwarfism who will be part of the Limoeiro gang.
Dwarfism is a disorder that causes short stature, due to genetic, hormonal, nutritional or environmental changes, which prevent the body from growing and developing as it should.
The story is based on a real case of a boy from Caxias do Sul (RS) who has achondroplasia, the most common type of disability.
In Maurício de Sousa’s new work, the reader will follow Bernardo’s first day of school at Limoeiro School, where Mônica, Cebolinha, Magali, Cascão and other characters in the class study.
After meeting the boy, the children begin to question his height and learn about the little boy’s story, which tells about the difficulties faced by people with dwarfism.
Bernardo’s real-life mother, Flávia Berti Hoffmann, believes that the inclusion of the character in the Turma da Mônica universe will make a big difference for all people with dwarfism. “We have to make an effort to show society that people with dwarfism have the right to live a normal life, and that everyone’s role is to contribute to this happening in a natural way, without prejudice.”
For Maurício de Souza, it was very interesting to create a new character with Bernardo’s characteristics, making Turma da Mônica a comic with greater inclusion of different children from around the world.
The comic book titled Our Friend with Dwarfism will show the importance of raising people’s awareness about dwarfism, thus breaking down certain prejudices due to lack of information.
The comic will be released by the publisher Culturama and its launch event will take place on October 25th (National Day to Combat Prejudice Against People with Dwarfism) at Avenida Paulista, 2073 – city of São Paulo.
