Mike Mignola talks about ‘Leonide the Vampyr’ and ‘Hellboy in Love #1’

The month of October has already arrived and, with it, the entire universe also revolves around monsters, ghosts, goblins, etc. In this sense, Mike Mignolathe then-acclaimed creator of “Hellboy,” has taken full advantage of this Halloween season with a little help from Dark Horse Comics. As it turns out, the remarkable “Leonide the Vampyr: Miracle at the Crow’s Head” is available in comic shops now, as Mignola joins forces with Rachele Aragno to show what happens when a young vampire lands in an unprepared village.

With that in mind, the titular Leonide will join “Hellboy in Love,” featuring the hero’s first encounter with archaeologist adventurer Anastasia from co-writer Christopher Golden, artist Matt Smith, and colorist Chris O’Halloran. But wait, there’s more! Last but not least, it’s also worth noting the upcoming documentary “Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters,” by Jim Demonakos and Kevin Konrad Hanna.

According to the information we have available, the comic promises a hidden adventure for anyone who can get to their nearest comic book store, both physical and digital, as the documentary makes its own debut round at LA’s Million Dollar Theatre, followed by its screening at the Portland Film Festival in late October.

Question: With a title like “Hellboy in Love,” fans know they’re in for a treat. Could this new series have come about purely to remind comic readers that Hellboy is more of a pulse than he’s often given credit for?

“No. Chris created the character Anastasia in the first Hellboy story he wrote, and we had the idea that HB had been traveling with her, his first real girlfriend, for a year or so. So I’ve known for years that there was this time frame that we would eventually deal with. It was just a matter of Chris and I finding the right time to do it and finding the perfect artist for the job. And Matt Smith is the perfect artist for it. Sometimes you just have to wait.”

Question: Once comic book fans pick up their copies of “Leonide” and “Hellboy in Love,” do you have any other must-reads you’d recommend they pick up for their Halloween reading?

“For really big, scary horror, ‘Lip Hook’ and ‘The Man Who Laughs’ or really anything by David Hine and Mark Stafford. For the best werewolf comedy of all time, ‘Moonshine’ by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso. For insane monster action by James Harren and Shaolin, ‘Cowboy’ by Geof Darrow. For real-world horror, Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Did? by Harold Schechter and Eric Powell. Or — for comfort food — I could go back to the things I loved so much a long time ago. The Marvel Frankenstein and ‘Man-Thing’ comics drawn by Mike Ploog and ‘Tomb of Dracula’ (still my favorite horror comic of all time) by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan.”
