“Dragon Ball Super”, the continuation of the story originally published in the Japanese comic series “Dragon Ball”, continues the adventures of Goku, a Saiyan who was sent to Earth with the mission of conquering it, but ended up becoming its eternal savior from various threats.
Recently, after the release of its latest film “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” in theaters and the conclusion of the “Granolah” arc, the manga returned with a new saga, focused on the experiences of Goten and Trunks, the boys who achieved fusion during the Majin Buu saga, both in the original manga and in the animated series.
Seeking to give space to the main duo, Goku and Vegeta, who are training hard with Whis and Bills, the person responsible for the work, the mangaka Toyotaromade some comments about the development of the arc, bringing curiosities and some ideas about the future of the work.
In an interview with the official website of “Dragon Ball Super”, Toyotaro commented on the interest in continuing Trunks’ story and stated that his team had ideas and a desire to explore the character even further.
However, the arc needed to be smaller and simpler (is anything grandiose coming?), so the return of Mirai Trunks was not an option. The current arc, “Super Hero”, will better develop the first steps of the duo’s adolescence, tracing similar moments with Gohan’s beginning in the Buu saga, in which they attend school and dress up as superheroes to save people.
The interest in Trunks as part of the story was evident in one of the mangaka’s speeches. Check it out:
“I was wanting to do a story with Trunks as the protagonist even before the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie was in development.”
Afterwards, Toyotaro gave some details and information regarding the story of the current arc:
“It’s something that interested me. But I didn’t know if it would really fit into the main story… I mentioned that I wanted to do it as a spinoff. I must have mentioned it years ago.”
Furthermore, he explained why he placed the current “Super Hero” arc at this point in history, since some time for Goku and Vegeta is needed, now that Freeza has enough power to defeat the Saiyans.

“So when we were thinking about focusing on a character other than Goku and doing something different, the first thing that came to mind was to bring in a story with Trunks. I thought maybe this was finally my chance to do that.”
For Toyotaro, it was the ideal moment to pause the focus on Goku and, with the arrival of the new film, connect a new story with Trunks and, also, reproduce the references to Gohan’s adolescence, still taking advantage of some characters from the film.
The arc promises to be shorter than the previous ones and more simplified in nature. There will certainly be some growth in the duo’s abilities or in their fusion, so we’ll just have to follow the next chapters.
