When Disney+ plays with fire, Disney+ gets burned. The platform has lost several million subscribers several times since its launch. According to the latest figures, Disney+ currently has 111.3 million users worldwide. There is no need to look far for the reasons for this mass migration. Last August, Disney+ drew up a road map of radical changes to be introduced to its service. If the platform then boasted of offering a cheaper formula with ads, this was actually camouflaging the overall increase in prices, which certainly scared off a large number of subscribers.

Of course, we will also have to add the end of the account sharing that became official last August, which will reflect Netflix’s strategy in this field in a broad sense. If France is still spared at this stage (but not for long), that’s no longer the case for American users, who now have to pay to use their accounts from another home. Unsurprisingly, 400,000 of them canceled their subscriptions in the last quarter of 2023.
But it’s not all bad with Disney+’s financial results. Hulu is particularly pleased to see its user base grow from 1.2 million to 45.1 million; This is probably due to the great success of The Bear’s second season. In India, Hotstar offering increased from 700,000 subscribers to 38.3 million. Time will tell whether this will be enough to keep the boat afloat. With the end of account sharing being made public, subsequent sharing looks set to still be difficult for Disney+.
