Two drunken fans at an incident in Tamil Nadu Indian Premier League started fighting over who was the best cricketer- Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. One of them stuttered- S Dharamraj. He was a Royal Challengers Bangalore fan who killed Mumbai Indians fan P Vignesh. After the story made headlines, a polarized Twitterverse trended a hashtag called “ArrestKohli.”
While the two fans were debating which player was the best, 21-year-old Dharamraj could not stand the abuse Vignesh brought to his stuttering problem. Vignesh, 24, had completed his ITI and was awaiting a work visa to Singapore.
Both he and Dharamraj hail from Poyyur village in Ariyalur district in Tamil Nadu. On Tuesday night, they were arguing in an open field near the SIDCO Industrial Estate near Mallur. Police arrested Dharamraj on Thursday.
“Both had been drinking. According to the initial investigation, Vignesh was supporting Mumbai Indians. Indian Premier League (IPL) while Dharmaraj was a Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) supporter.‘ said the police.
“During their discussion, Vignesh allegedly mocked RCB and Virat Kohli. Vignesh had a habit of embarrassing Dharmaraj, who was a stutterer. He made some remarks that day comparing the RCB team to Dharmaraj’s speaking difficulty. This infuriated Dharmaraj, who attacked Vignesh with a bottle and then hit him in the head with a cricket bat. Dharmaraj soon fled the scene.‘ said the officials.
