Australia made a fantastic comeback after their 89 match loss against New Zealand at the 2022 T20 World Cup. Tuesday [October 25], the absolute carnage of Aussie hitter Marcus Stoinis, from Sri Lanka led by Dasun Shanaka, to victory at Optus Stadium in Perth. Stoinis had the fastest half-century at this year’s mega event, but with this special hit, he joins Yuvraj Singh on an elite roster.
Sri Lanka released 157/6 with a cameo from Charith Asalanka. Australia failed to get off to a fast start as they lost star striker David Warner (10 balls by 11 runs) in the fifth round. Maheesh Theekshanavery first ball.
Australia was advancing before Mitchell Marsh (who made 18 runs with 17 balls in fours and sixes) hit the road with Dhananjaya de Silva’s insane ninth-round delivery. But the Australians weren’t in a dire situation even as they lost their fourth base in 13th in the form of Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell smashed two fours and two maxs to score 23 points out of 12 balls.
After Maxwell’s departure, it was Marcus Stoinis’ show. Stoinis landed just 18 ball 59 hits with four caps and six maxes at a massive stroke rate of 327.78. He was assisted by Australian captain Aaron Finch, who played a very slow shot of 42 balls in 31 runs. Australia won the game by seven wickets with 21 balls left.
Stoinis scored a half-century win with just 17 balls, making it also the fastest of an Australian in T20Is after Warner’s 18-ball 50. Stoinic and Dutch player Stephan Myburg have now scored the joint fastest half-century goal at the T20 World Cup. The fastest half-century list is topped by the legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who shot 50 shots with just 12 balls in the 2007 T20 World Cup match against England in Durban.
