“How much it hurt me” – Joe Root resigns as England’s Test captain, Twitter reacts to his resignation

Joe Root relinquished England’s Test captaincy on Friday, April 15, after disappointing Ashes and Caribbean tours. England have won just one of their previous 17 games, and Joe Root says the business has hurt him a lot.

Joe Root was appointed captain in 2017 following the departure of Alastair Cook. For five years at the head of the team, he played 64 matches, won 27 and lost 26. During his tenure as captain, he scored 5,295 points in 14 centuries and 26 half centuries.

After recent defeats ashes and the West Indies, against fans and even against former England captains Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan, and had begun publicly calling for him to step down as captain.

“It was the toughest decision” – Joe Root

“After returning from a tour of the Caribbean and having time to think, I have decided to step down as England’s male Test captain. “It was the toughest decision I’ve had to make in my career, but after discussing it with my family and those closest to me, I know the timing is right.”

“I am extremely proud to have captained my country and I will look back on the past five years with great pride. It has been an honor to do this job and be the guardian of what is the pinnacle of English cricket.

Joe Root added, “I loved running my country, but lately I’ve seen what a huge price it has been and the impact it had on me while I was away from the game.”

But he said he is excited to continue producing performances that will enable the team to succeed. He added: “I look forward to helping the next captain, my teammates and my coaches in any way I can.”

Ben Stokes is the vice-captain favorite to replace him, but Jos Buttler, Stuart Broad and Rory Burns are among the other top contenders.
