After England’s series loss to the West Indies, batsman Joe Root stepped down as captain of the Test team on Friday. Joe Root has described stepping down as England’s Test captain as one of his most difficult decisions, but admits he only recently realized how much of an impact the role had on him.

With a string of successful records, the 31-year-old resigned, but a disastrous year of red ball cricket has made his situation untenable.

Likewise, versatile Brit Ben Stokes shared a photo of himself with Root on Instagram, saying, “It’s been a great trip with you man. It’s been an honor to have one of my best friends take us to the pitch. You gave your all for English cricket and we all thank you for your efforts and dedication.” We would like to express our gratitude.
Ties in Antigua and Barbados were promising, but England were crushed by 10 wickets in the final Test to lose 1-0 as captain in Root’s 64th Test, despite not being a major combo. James Anderson and Stuart Broad, who was inexplicably left at home. That number in itself is a turning point for most matches as England captain, with 27 wins placing him first in terms of overall wins, but the Test side has now undergone another leadership change.
As England’s male Test captain, Root holds the record for most matches and victories. He has more victories than Michael Vaughan, Sir Alastair Cook and Sir Andrew Strauss combined. Following Cook’s resignation in 2017, Root was appointed captain. He coached the team in several key series wins, including a 4-1 win against India in 2018 and a 3-1 away win against South Africa in 2020.
