Arvin Sanjeev, an Indian inventor, has built an open source smart glass prototype. The name of his project is actually Smart-Cap, since it’s a linked thread after all. At first, I think it’s pretty ugly. But on closer inspection, it still is. Ok, the quality of the device does not lie here. So let’s try to understand.
If it’s a cover, it’s because the components take up space. And that makes sense, because what Arvin Sanjeev did, is to use existing components that it puts together. The machine under the hood is the Raspberry-Pi nanocomputer already used on the Oculus Rift for a real latency simulation. In terms of software, his device uses Linux and voice recognition software.
Ok, not the best in class, nor the best at miniaturization, but it’s completely open source and the creator explains how to make his own hat on diyhacking embarrassing in small ways.
And the inventor does not spare himself, explaining everything from the element list to how to assemble it with supporting photos. Last step and obviously because he likes to go to the end of things, explains how to operate the machine in terms of software and accompanies us in programming the voice commands.
Hardware level, you don’t need much:
- A Raspberry Pi model B nanocomputer (the word nanocomputer is scary but worth about 30 euros)
- A USB webcam with built-in microphone
- 2.5 inch LCD screen
- headset with microphone
- A magnifying glass with aspherical lenses
- Cardboard or plastic sheets (uses car sunshade)
- gum
And that’s all. While it’s not the sharpest processing we’ve seen so far, we’ll welcome the approach and remain vigilant about what happens next. because When the web takes over an open source project, you never know how far it can go..
