Chromecast: Google announces the end of major updates for the first generation

Remember: Google released the Chromecast six years ago, a dongle intended to plug into a television’s HDMI port. It sold for €39 when it launched in France and allows you to send audiovisual content from a smartphone, tablet or computer to your television. Nowadays, it also lets you control a Netflix series directly with your Google Home speaker. Chromecast, which sold 55 million units between 2013 and 2017, has proven itself as Google’s biggest success.

Google will no longer offer major updates to first Chromecast

After six years of software support, Google has decided to no longer offer major updates for the first-gen ChromecastLet our colleagues at 9to5Google in an article published Aug. Latest firmware version loaded: 1.36.157768. All other new Chromecasts have already been upgraded to 1.40.156414.

“Chromecast recently turned 6 years old. We’re excited that some of the early adopters are still using this first-gen device, and we continue to update it with bug and security fixes.” He explains Google in a press release.

Since this first generation, Google has marketed many other Chromecasts. The company launched a Chromecast 2, which we tested in 2015, and then a Chromecast 3 in October 2018. In 2016, Google also released a 4K compatible version, the Chromecast Ultra, priced at €79. If you want to buy a dongle, we recommend choosing one of these solutions.
