WhatsApp is forced to put aside smartphones every year. In 2019, the messaging app dropped support for one billion smartphones, including many Nokia phones and older Android devices. More recently, WhatsApp has discontinued some older versions of iOS and Android.
With January 2021 fast approaching, WhatsApp reminds on its official website that some iPhones and Android smartphones may not work properly with the app. If you already have WhatsApp installed on your phone, you can continue to use it as before. However, some features may no longer work properly over time.
WhatsApp will no longer work with some iOS and Android versions
WhatsApp recommends using an iPhone with: at least iOS9, a version of the mobile operating system released in 2015. Fortunately, most iPhones in circulation run on a newer version of iOS. Apple offers software support for its devices for about 5 years. Also, new iOS updates are quickly installed by most users. Within 5 weeks, the latest iOS update, iOS 14, was installed by 46.36% of compatible devices in circulation.
However, WhatsApp may no longer work properly. Some older iPhones lacking iOS 9, such as the iPhone 4 (and earlier models). If you’re still using an iPhone 5, 5S or 6, we recommend going to your device’s settings and quickly installing the latest update available.
On the Android side, WhatsApp excludes still working smartphones A version earlier than Android 4.0.3 Gingerbread. According to the latest news, less than 0.3% of Android smartphones in circulation in the world are affected. If this is your case, it is recommended to invest in a new Android smartphone, especially since devices without updates pose a risk to computer security.
