WhatsApp is testing a new possibility: sending messages with an expiration date. The new feature first appeared in version 2.19.275 of the Android app – but it includes a server component that further restricts access to some beta users. WhatsApp already allows deletion of messages and other content for a limited time after sending.
WhatsApp adds self-destructing messages
In short, this new feature automates this task, for example when transferring sensitive documents. Frankly, this innovation evokes the workings of Snapchat, the rebellious app Facebook never managed to buy.
We’ve seen Mark Zuckerberg’s group, which now brings together Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, distribute Snapchat-like features like Stories in its other apps. Still, this time around, Facebook seems to be catching up with its rivals that offer similar features.
Examples include Gmail, which has added the ability to send self-destructing messages, or Telegram, which has recently added a similar feature. We told you for now, this functionality is in testing phase. You can try to make it appear by manually downloading the beta 2.19.275 APK from the link at the end of the article, but there is no guarantee that it will work.
As explained by our colleagues from WABetaInfo, at the source of the discovery, these messages also appear to be enabled via a server component. And not everyone who installs this version can see it yet.
