It’s not the first time a copy of WhatsApp has gone bad. Last year, fake versions of WhatsApp plagued the Google Play Store. In fact, one of them has been downloaded more than a million times. Much like the official app, this copy of WhatsApp tried to generate ad revenue on behalf of the hackers by bombarding you with pop-ups.
WhatsApp Plus: Do not download this fake app!
WhatsApp Plus is spreading on the web via a link Explain Malwarebytes Lab researchers with an APK file. When the link opens, WhatsApp Plus will ask you to go to the Google Play Store to install its latest version. The hackers will obviously direct you to a copy of the Google Play Store.
To convince you to download WhatsApp Plus, hackers promise to let you “Sending 100+ photos only once and hiding them from your contacts if you have received their messages”. Be careful when downloading an app, whether it’s on the Play Store or not: a few tips may indeed lead you to the ear of cheating. In this case, some texts were written in Arabic.
Once installed on your smartphone, WhatsApp Plus will work as official app : you will be able to send and receive messages. Only difference and size: The app will collect your personal data like numbers and photos in your address book. MalwareBytes currently does not know for what purpose this application is stealing your private data.
