WhatsApp: Europe threatens Facebook with 50 million euro fine

50 million euro fine for WhatsApp!

The sanction has not yet been imposed as the request has been considered by all European organizations equivalent to CNIL. The latter may also have a say, as WhatsApp will continue to share certain data with Facebook in France. Thus, the amount of the penalty can be changed. Facebook, for its part, still refuses to comment on the change in the messaging app’s terms of use.

Despite the controversy, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are the favorite messengers of the French. The popularity of the industry giants isn’t likely to wane as many users set their sights on other, more privacy-friendly platforms. In December 2020, Google was fined 100 million euros by the CNIL. This is currently the largest amount Europe has requested from a GAFA member.
